It's worth doing in the case of drivers, but only if you can guarantee the strike 100% of the time. You pull out your fade driver but hit a massive snap hook :o that's where it would fall down for me.
I've never heard of it with putters, it would come down to practice and feel with one IMO.

You mean you can't hit a fade or snap hook with your putter?

These days absolutely not. In the old days I had (before we had gap wedges, hybrids etc) I had an old 8 iron I used at Wimbledon COmmon as there were a lot of stony lies around and it was ideal for just getting it back in play and I wasn't too fussed if I got a ding in it
