Leicester still have 9 games left, almost a quarter of the season.

Personally I would say that taking £29K now from a £20 bet is not weak, just sensible. It's Leicester after all, not Man City or Arsenal

Hence the reason it was 5000/1 and he got the chance to cash out for £29k. I wouldn't suggest that he was wrong or weak for cashing out but surely if you put £20 on Leicester to win the league at those odds you are basically saying goodbye to your money 999 times out of 1000. On that basis then I would probably have let it roll for another couple of weeks.

EDIT - or even 4999 times out of 5000.

Hard to judge without knowing his circumstances as that sort of money can be life-changing. I'd like to think that I'd have held on as the loss is technically only £20, but confronted with £29k hard cash (and the potential earache from Mrs BiM! ) I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the same so I'm not in a position to judge him. I just hope that it turns out to be the wrong decision purely because, as it won't be my team this year, I really want to see Claudio Ranieri get the prize.

Is the right answer.

The "gamblers" are just playing the maths, and dont like bookies getting one over on them.

Say your 55 and if 29 K means you retire 10 years early - go for it. Its what the difference it makes in your life. Work an extra 10 years for a £50 layout - know which one I'd pick. That said, may have waited another week or so, with a London derby over the weekend, and playing a mid-table team away.

Heard a Paddy power guy on talksport the other week and was saying in something like 30-40 years, doesnt think there has ever been a 5,000-1 winner in any sport.

Good decision to cash out IMO

It might have started as a £20 bet but in reality that 29k belonged to him and it would have been reckless to gamble that amount of money.

Would you risk 29k on Leicester at 2/1 now to win the title with 9 games to go?

I know I wouldn't.

Definitely a hard call and the pragmatist in me agrees totally with you but the optimist in me would want to let it run having gone this long just for the hell of it. £29k for a £20 isn't too shabby is it

I've not done the sums, but given how bad value cash out is I'd be surprised if you couldn't get yourself more profit by backing the others instead - funds permitting obviously.

I think I'd have bottled it in some fashion.

It's easy to say it's terrible value, but I think it's a different beast with that amount of money at stake.

If someone offers me 6/4 on heads/tails I'll have tenners on it day after day.
If I'm only allowed one go and the minimum bet is £50,000 it's probably not going to happen.

Let me know if you need someone to back the 50k at 6/4 gary :p

Seeing the fixture list I would have let it run for a while. Get to the last three games and it is tight, I would then consider cashing in.

Makes one think that if your team isn't one of the big ones, a £20 bet a year might be worth a gamble. There will be bets like that next year from Sunderland to Swansea. This is great advertisement for the bookies.

Back to the Future II was on TV yesterday. Very fitting.

I have your number on speed dial for when the occasion happens :D

You know what I mean though hopefully. If it's a (relative to personal circumstances) crazy amount of money, it isn't necessarily all about the maths.

At which point your 29k cash out offer may have dwindled to £290 😮
Why ? If it was still tight, and Leicester were ahead it would still be worth a few bob. If not let it run further. If Leicester had dropped off before would have cashed in earlier. As it is they are 5 points ahead, and their next games are Newcastle (home) Palace (away) Soton (home) Sunderland (away):mmm:
