Seen one I like in my local bike shop, but research show little reviews and of which a lot say they are just the name now and not a lot more.

this was my dream bike when i was 13,my local bike shop had one in the window and i would pass it every day,i told my dad about it and asked if i could have it for Christmas,these were the days when a man would work 6 days a week for £16.On Christmas morning i flung open the living room door to see a shiny red racing bike with the name RALIEGH down the tube, i could see my dads look of hurt as he looked at my disappointed face,i didnt know that the claude butler bikes cost nearly twice as much,i had that bike for years and years and cherished it,and told my dad how much i loved it when ever i got it out the shed,dont think he ever believed me though.

Claud Butler are OK, well established brand a bit like Raleigh were. How much is it if you don't mind me asking? To be honest you won't notice a great deal of difference in brands until you start spending upwards of £1000, and even then its less about the frame/fork itself and more about the components bolted to it!

Only wanting to spend £500 on the bike. Specific bike is the Urban 500 I have in mind.

One of my lads is still riding, on a daily basis, the Claude Butler I purchased him, over 20 years ago, to get to school on... None of the 'bits' are original but the frame has stood the test of time...

Have a look at Whistle bikes Andy. Got one at the start of the year, American firm. I got the Miwok 1483 and it has been fantastic. I only use it for some off-road stuff and it's as good as the Marin that I had about 10 years ago.

What are you using the bike for please? For £500 I would recommend looking at cube or ghost bikes very good and come with better component then most other £500 bikes. Both are made in Germany.

I would recommend looking at last years models that are exactly the same as the current models with a different colour way , I got a 2014 Felt six 60 for les than £400 with pretty much the same components as the 2015 model that retails for over £600.

So there is a wide purpose of use there. If you are planning on doing trails I would advise on getting a hard tail mountain bike but also look at getting some slick tyres if you are doing most on the road and keep the grippy tyres for everything else.

Claude butler were awesome when I was a kid! No idea now, if it were me, I would be looking at specialized. I got a 29'r with discs for sub 500.

I paid £400 for it in January. £269 os a steal for a superb bike. Component quality is superb and I reckon it looks the business as well.

I bought. New bike yesterday. It's very nice. Took it for a spin this morning, and it's silly quick. Love it.
But.
Had a go on this years boardman full carbon road bike (not out yet). Wow. Amazing. For only (yes, only) £1300, it's pretty special.
That aside, I also had a go on a shopping trolley with electric assist. It's like having a turbo on your bike. Guaranteed to raise a smile. I was blatting round the bike shop on this. Toot toot, get out of my way.
But.
