............Shootin 4 over par for your handicap in the first singles medal of the year....

Played yesterday and today...Myself and Daa were beaten 3 and 2 yesterday in the foursomes 1/4 final so having a tee time for 9:30 this morning in the first singles medal of the year i was hoping for a better outing...

Weather was perfect very slight breeze and blue sky..Nice warm short sleeve weather..
Anyway i went out with the attitude that i was going to keep the one ball for the round as best i could which i managed but my putting and scrambling today left me down...

I had 8 pars but a mix of very bad triple and double bogies ruined the card for me.Mainly due to wayward tee shots and having to reload.....To be precise 3 triple and 3 double bogies....
I tried hard to get back some of the lost shots but it wasnt to be...15 is alot...Gross 91 nett 75 in the end

I can take some positives from the round though...Im starting to settle into my i10's but i have to start working on my scrambling from around the greens...It was atrocious

All experience though...Onwards and upwards :)

Four over your handicap isn't that bad. Far too many golfers expect to play to their handicap all the time when the reality, supported by statistics, suggests you will probably only do it three or four times a year.

The main thing is you have some clearly identified areas of your game to work on, and it's not even May!

Only play to your handicap 3 or 4 times a year? Dont think so.

CONGU stats must be wrong then! That's what the average club golfer achieves in qualifying competitions.

Rather than merely saying that, Andy, do you not think it would be more constructive to say where you think the stats are wrong? How often do you expect the average club golfer to play to his handicap in a qualifier? Every week? Once a month?

I'm quite sure if you look at your own club's results you won't see it happening with such high frequency, except maybe for those golfers who are rapidly improving, and they are in the minority.

For the average club player (I'm not talking about cat 1 and lower cat 2's, as they are not your average club golfer), given the qualifying season amounts to probably only 6 or 7 months of the year, it really isn't all that often.

Unless, of course, we have artificially high handicaps.

;)

I guess I would be ok with that, first medal of the year, course still playing long as not much roll, and you realise where you probs are so have something to work at. as you said, onward and upwards!

:)

I prob play to hadicap or better once a month in qualifiers, but then i guess it depends on how much you play, and how many qualifiers you enter, stats can be decieving!! :)

Rather than one average club golfer, perhaps they mean the average of all club golfers, a lot of which are guys who never get anywhere near their handicap for whatever reason, but just love playing the game and can't get 0.1's back quick enough to track their 'progress'.

As an example, our comp this weekend had exactly 100 entrants, and 13 made CSS or better.

If the average of club golfers play to handicap 13/100, 4 times a year to handicap would mean about 30 qualifiers a year which is a lot for me but probably sensible for some.

It may well be that there is not much to choose between the average club golfer and the average of all club golfers, but the general message is pretty clear. The majority of players expecting to play to their handicap in qualifiers regularly are placing too high a level of expectation upon themselves. That's the reality of it.

I accept there will always be exceptions to the rule. A lot of our Cat 1 players regularly play to their handicap or better, but that is why they are Cat 1. The same can be said of many Cat 2's and the more consistent Cat 3 golfers.

But with the average handicap in the UK being Cat 3, it follows that many simply don't play to their handicap more than a handful of times a year.
