carry a left handed club in my bag? I'm right handed obviously...

There is a little wall just off one of the greens at my club and I've parked my ball near it at least a dozen times being forced to take a drop. I'm sure that if I had a left handed wedge I would be able to hit the ball on the green instead.

I once hit it with the back of the putter back on the green but my playing partner said that that is certainly not allowed as you can only hit the ball with the face of the club.

You can carry a left handed club so long as you dont have more than the 14 club limit

I think you can hit with the back of a putter, a lot of Pro's tap in with any part of the putter head!

Is this true?

You can play left handed with a right handed club, if you flip a wedge you can get a pretty good surface to play with, then play with your right hand over left, i prefer to have a gap between them but thats cos I had a hurling swing (the Irish sport) have a look at this

Any more urban myths out there?

One of our Seniors - no novice, had played to a reasonable standard in South Africa - was insistent on the following:
A newly planted heather scrape was designated GUR. He took his free drop and proceeded to put it back into the GUR another 3 times. He claimed that all subsequent visits to the GUR were not counted as strokes.

I have a left handed 6 iron in my bag as I always seem to get stuck up against trees and struggle to get out, I put a leftie in my bag last week and used it once, but I got out beautifully into a playable position, its staying in :D

No problem taking a left handed club if you want to feel and can use it as long as it's within the 14 club limits. Rule 4-4

The hit only with the face thing is BS, what about a really bad shank!

Rule 14-1 The ball must be fairly struck at with the head of the club and must not be pushed, scraped or spooned.

There are restrictions on the design of clubs limiting them to 1 striking face with the exception of putters. But this has nothing to do with what part of the club you play with.

A chipper with 2 faces isn't counted as two clubs. It is non-conforming (they are classed as irons) and technically can't be used in competition.

If you are carrying one of those daft double faced chippers you can only carry 12 clubs plus that as it is classed as two clubs.

Wrong - you cannot count it as 2 clubs. A 2-faced club is illegal - end of story (putters excepted).

Another urban myth.

I have seen instruction articles encouraging putting using the toe only from off the green, so I guess you can use any part of the club head. I often use the back of a 4 iron for playing left handed shots out from trees.

This guy is taking the pi$$ it would have to be a local rule with regard to newly planted areas some courses do call these plantations and allow a free drop, but if you visit again thats another shot.

Think we need a sticky post with all the urban myths in one place- not a rule book as such but just the common misunderstandings that seem to happen regularly with barrack room lawyers on the course, maybe even with easy ways to remember such things.........
For example, many cant remember if its 1 club length or 2 for hazards/unplayable lies/water etc etc and the way I remember is that if you are taking a 1 shot penalty for anything you get 2 club lengths

at a recent golf day one of the guys was talking in hushed tones about someone in his group he suspected of cheating. apparently when taking an unplayable he had gone back as far as he liked keeping ball and flag in line...

he played off 11 i think and this was a new rule to him, the lack of knowledge and rule myths really do continually surprise...
