The best shot thread got me thinking about my worst collapse (and there have been a few- 4 up with 4 to play in the county matchplay and losing comes to mind.. :p).

My worst collapse that still gives me sleepless nights was being 4 under par gross standing on the 15th tee having had 10 pars and 4 birdies- it really was that once in a decade red letter day- and finishing with 4 bogeys for level par.

Now i would bite your hand off for a 72, but that day was one of the biggest disappointments i can remember.

What's the one that sticks in your teeth?

The one that comes to mind from most recently was late last summer, the 1st weekend I went out with my new MP-57's.

It was only a bounce game but I went out in +2 gross, which was my best ever front 9. Then I started counting and ended up 14+ for the back 9 which is the highest I've soht for 9 holes in a long time!

As far as comps go. My only one comp win was as a Junior. I ended up winning by 1 shot, but was playing great golf (well, I considered it great). Ended up collapsing on the back 9, missed a short putt to win by two and ended up (just) getting the one coming back to win by a shot.

One that springs to mind was years ago at Chelsfield Lakes. Was stood on the 18th needing only a double-bogey 6 to shoot 79 GROSS (off 22 handicap). Had never (and still haven't 12 years on!) broken 80.

Tee shot was brilliant, with a little fade. Next shot is over water if you really go for the pin, but I had no intention of doing that. Tons of room down the left with no trouble all the way to the green.
So hit my next shot into the water! Dropped and hit it down the left. Into a greenside bunker. Took two to get out and then two putts for a crowd-pleasing 8 and an 81!
:( :( :( :(

4 under gross on 16th tee at Devils Dyke GC. Two balls out of bounds later, walked off with a quadruple bogey. Whoops.

Probably the last competition I played in, the monthly medal 2 weeks ago. Stood on the 16th tee at 3 under (nett) looking at my first ever cut and as it turns out a comfortable win in my division. Needed only to bogey the last 3 holes, but managed to end up with double, double, treble for a net 73 and yet another buffer zone, ended up tied for 4th in the comp.

The most frustrating thing was that I knew my game wasn't going great, I had been hanging on to a good front nine score with some ridiculous recovery shots for at least 4 or 5 holes and was beginning to get the feelign that for once I could grind out a score, but having to wait at 16 for the group ahead gave me the chance to think about it all and then everything collapsed :p

Played a comp at Bearwood Lakes. Finished front 9 -2 gross (off 9 handicap), having hit all 9 greens, holed 2 birdie putts and come close to a couple more without ever really risking a bogey. Real Luke Donald stuff.

Then had a sausage sandwich at the 9th, followed by double bogeys at the 10th and 11th, and it didn't improve much after that.

My worst collapse happened just over a week ago and I too was 4 under par standing on the 18th tee.

I've never broken 70 before and a par on the final hole would've given me a 68. I hadn't actually been hitting the ball particluarly well that day, hitting all sorts of duffs and fats with my irons, but my short game was saving me all day, only taking 11 putts on the front 9.

The 18th at Hawks Ridge in Atlanta is a reachable par 5 that I had eagled the day before, and also a hole with a lot of good memories for me (I've hit my best ever shot on the hole and have always scored well on it)

I hit a decent drive but was 5 yards short of clearing the bunker I needed to and it kicked left into it. I then had a choice to make. I could either go for the green or I could play the ball out sideways and layup to about 130 yards. I had 168 to the hole which was slightly downhill and lots of room past the pin. There was no lip on the bunker to speak of but I would be hitting the ball over about 100 yds of water which would require at least a 140yd carry to clear.

The caddy was trying to hand me my SW but I knew that it wasnt that tough of a shot, and even if I missed it, I would still clear the water easily and I would then be about 40 yards away from the green with a fairly easy shot.

So I took my 7 iron and aimed for the back of the green, thinking what I always think which is a tip I got from Tiger in fairway bunkers "stand tall to the ball throughout the swing" I made good contact with the shot but knew it was going to be a bit short of the green. I couldn't believe it when I saw it drop 2 yards past the water and pop backwards into it... I don't know what happened to be honest, I think I was so concerned with making good contact, that I forgot to put any power into the swing!

Anyways it was a leteral hazard so after taking a drop I still had a decent chance of getting up and down, but I just fell apart. Duffing my chip into a greenside bunker, then left the bunker shot short of the green... I then nearly holed my chip for bogey leaving myself a tap in double bogey 7 to shoot a 70 :(

My golf didn't recover for the rest of the trip tbh and still not quite over it yet!

Ah...the sausage sarnie...always a fatal but tasty mistake!

Can relate to the -4 under on the 15th tee.

Was 15 at the time and was playing a good bit. Off about 9ish at the time and everything was starting to come together. Played solid for 14 holes then finished double, double, single, single for a 2 over 73.

I should have been happy with that really but the shock of finishing so badly and completly collapsing really set me back. Took me years to get back into the game after that.

My biggest regret was not taking the positives and getting back down the range instead of getting put off completly.

My attitude isn't perfect by any means now but I would have been able to cope with it so much better.

Thanks for asking me to relive that horror!!!!

Ive had plenty of blow ups but none that immediately spring to mind. So I will use a mate of mines, he's a scratch golfer and is desperate to get to +1, a few weeks ago when he was off +.4 he was 3 under par after 15 and all was looking good, then he finished jumbo jet style 7,6,7 (1 being a par 3) Ouch!

In the club Championship 2 years ago was leading after the first round doing well with 3 holes left to play 2 par 4's and a tough par 3. Said to myself 3 4's will win this walked off half a hour gutted with 3 6's, in the end 3 5's would have been good enough.

I must admit i'm thoroughly enjoying these! Good to know we're all in the same boat. I can almost see the strained faces, steaming ears and asterix laden 4 letter profanities right now.

scenario 1... 5 under gross on the 16th tee in a medal and nr'd.

3 tee shots in the cabbage and not found and no way was I going back for more punishment. didnt know the double bogie rule at the time so didnt bother playing the last 2 holes , not that I was in any state to swing a club by then anyway.

scenario 2... 4 under par gross sitting 50 yards short of the 16th hole after my drive. Bladed a wedge over the green and OOB , duffed my next into the front bunker and got out and 3 stabbed for 8. Tried to cut the corner and go for the green on 17th but hit it OOB and took a double. Last hole sliced 2 tee shots OOB and finally gave up in disgust

That is toooo much. I need to lie down and exorcise this thought forever.

Poor you.

5 under gross after 16.....how good was that?! :(
