World Handicap System

In NZ in inter club matches we had to keep a card and hand it in at the end. If you finished early you scored yourself as per what you have scored per your handicap.

Really, so do you have the mindset on the 1st tee, "Ok lets play rubbish and shoot my worst score ?" Maybe it's me just me thinking I'm going to shoot the lights out but there again I'm pretty positive .No reason why you cant practice shots on the course, remember it's best 10 from 20 some some rounds will be rubbish to your handicap index.

We used to score as per what you would have had per handicap wise i.e. par with no shot , bogey with

Your handicap index is just a number , it doesn't make you play better or worse , it has no effect on your swing but it will allow to play on a more even playing field when away from your home course when used in conjunction with the slope system

have to be honest that doesnt appeal at all, wouldnt want matchplay to count at all and definitely not the holes after the match is finished!

I'd agree as that was my feeling when I first got there, but after 6 years could see the merit of it. Yes you play Match play with a different mind set to when playing a medal but as your handicap index is an average and a reflection of how you're playing rather than your potential best I soon got used to it.

fair enough, hard to argue with someone who has played under those rules, at the end of the day handicap is just a number and would probably do most of us good that every round counted and we were less concerned with going up 0.1 each time we played a comp!

What happens if your having a knock about with friends and yu don't submit the card?!

Nothing but at out club it was closely monitored and those who did play a lot and not submit cards had a quiet word if they started featuring in the prizes.(You can see every club member with a handicap on line as there is only one system ) You'll not stop the out and out handicap cheats but I don't think any system will

Indeed if does free up the mind, although it did concentrate the mind knowing you were about to lose a " good round" out of your 20 that might mean an increase.

I suppose, if you're a streaky player like me, that your handicap could fluctuate quite widely over the course of a season.. Especially if you play 2 or 3 times a week....

So how much do handicaps go up/down by in this system? Say I play off 10 then play like I I'm off 28 for 20 rounds, do I get put up to 28, 24, 20..12?

As it's best 10 from 20 unlikely all those 20 would be total pants but if they were then yes your handicap would be reflective of that. Your index changes every two weeks and you can go up and down very quickly

Sounds like a cheats charter to me. Got a board comp in a few weeks, put in some proper naff cards, get a massive handicap rise and you're sorted. Or is that simplifying it too much?

I would like it.

Silly situation at the moment I only get a few chances a month to hand in cards, when I play twice a week.

My handicap does not reflect my playing standard. And it is the same for a lot of other people I see, both too high and too low handicaps.

Aye probable over simplifying it but in essence possible if you could play 20 rounds in 14 days , but at my club that would be noticed and you'd be watched very carefully , what sanctions they would employ I don't know as never saw or heard of it being done.

@upsidedown no I don't go expecting to shoot lights out, I'll work on things to know how they'll hold up under comp conditions. Appreciate you have played under it, I'd imagine I wouldn't be handing every card in. What happens if you just play 9?
