Its been reported that Tiger Woods is getting $2M (£1.3m) to play in Abu Dhabi this week,he was asked whether the payment influenced his scheduling,Woods replied "I`d have to say yes,it certainly does".Here`s a man with half a billion in the bank who`s games seriously on the slide getting more than the winners cheque for just turning up!.This could be justified somewhat I believe in he`s prime but not now.It would be nice if some of that money could be filtered down to players in the field that really struggle financially or even given to golf elsewhere in general.Reward for achievment yes(where have we heard this before!)but to give the fee to someone who`s game is in such decline is wrong,The arrogance and greed of this situation defies belief!.

Yes its a lot of money
but the money pool being dished out is a lot more these days due to the tIger effect.

Like it or not, the players on tour are earning more money because of tiger not less.
All this in tough economic climes as well

Decline, slide? strong words for a guy that has won more majors than the other top few golfers put together. He is still in his mid thirties coming back after a good few years of injury. Remember Jack won at Augusta aged 46. Come off it, he has plenty of time to reach that peak he was at in the early/mid noughties.
If you are offering, Ill do you a tenner that health being well, he will win at least one competition this year. If he can do that, it proves that he isnt in decline nor on a slide.
If anyone wants to pay him £1.2m that is for them to worry about.

If someone offered me a lorry load of cash to play I know i'd certainly take it, whether I was a gazillionaire or not.

As for achievement, perhaps getting appearance money like this, even though he's not at his best, still is his reward for what he's achieved over the last 15 years.

I'm happy to see him in Abu Dhabi, the golfing world's eyes are on the European Tour and I'm certain it will be a fantastic spectacle and we can show the Americans how the sport is really played. More importantly, show them how it should be broadcasted on TV.

Surely that the sum of money Tiger is being offered to turn up in Abu Dhabi is for his attendance at a sponsors event or function. Appearance money isn't allowed at European Tour events ;)

Tiger's ijuries have been both mental and physical. I do think he will win again this year but he won't be the force that he used to be. I wanted to put him in mmy fantasy team but he isn't a european tour member!

they obviously feel that having tiger there makes a massive difference to the numbers that come watch.it was said at the end of last season when he was playing, the gallery numbers were huge.

also the more money he gets the more money he ca put back into the many foundations he has set up.

Decline, slide?

Compared with his previous record - averaging 6 wins per year since turning Pro(98 in 16 years) - if he doesn't win some then, yes his career is in decline.

Tiger's appearence ups the crowd - simple as that.
Plus US TV will be more likely to show coverage...

those guys in the middle east can afford it,

i wonder if it was negotiated, or just an open offer, does seem quite a bit, i think i could have got them a better deal

It's their money, they can do what they like with it.

As for them giving it to the rest of the field, or some junior golf project, get real. What publicity would they get for that?

For a relatively small sum, they have tiger woods playing their event. The most famous golfer in the world.

Its also a much better field than the PGA tour tournie too, so will offer more ranking points.

A win here (unlikely) would put him back in the Top Ten (according to a report I read last week).

its a free market and if they want to pay someone to turn up and ply there trade at there tournament meet and greet sponsors and bring along lots of publicity no better way that get Tiger on board.

it happens all the time do you think wetswood poulter and mcilroy toured china recently for free?

Cannot believe that anyone would be surprised by the fact he's getting paid to appear.

It is not like he will be the only one to get paid to play somewhere this or indeed any other year.

McIlroy has admitted he was paid $5m to do the China tour thing last year.

Not bad money for a week spent in 5 star luxury, being helicoptered about, and driven in rollers, and only playing 18 holes of golf.

As for his 'decline'. I am pretty sure he won his last event.

Ok it was a limited field, but it was still a strong field and he had to play top level golf to win it.

The Fact is ....... Whatever price they are paying, Tiger playing in a Tournament anywhere boosts revenue in loadsa ways and is a worthwhile investment
Increased ticket sales, bigger attendances, more purchases on and off course, merchandise, bars, etc...
It increases Media Interest ...... Greater Publicity
Has huge reaction to viewing figures on TV, UK, but more so USA, which in turn leads to increase in those wishing to advertise during commercial breaks, knowing they have huge number of viewers tuned in
I read in a Golf Digest a year or 2 ago that some US TV companies that showed golf were happy to show all tournaments, but only wished to PAY for those which Tiger Woods teed it up in, such is the downturn in viewing figures when he is absent
And as has been said before, these Tour Pros are only now playing for the Huge Sums they are, due to The Tiger Factor
