Women's golf - different rules or just plain weird?

Talk about stereotyping...nowt new though and the side to golf I find most disappointing.

Today I hit a 240yd drive, I hit every par 3 in regulation and all with irons, I birdied 3 holes (Par 5, Par 4 and Par 3) and should rise above the usual (so called) banter - but can't !

I hear it at the club constantly and read it here too :(

yeah but did you stand on the tee box with you fellow playing partners?:lol:

just kidding!!!

i don't have an issue with ladie golfers as i don't come across them that much.i played a few comps this year with them and found it to be good fun,my partner holed a few monster putts which had me in stitches....i was putting like an eejit!!!!

There are plenty of women who play golf seriously, and to a competent or better level. I have no issues at all with women golfers.

Unfortunately, there are a few who give the wrong impression.

There was the one who was putting hand cream on on the tee, and then pretty much hurled her driver down the fairway as she couldn't grip the club. 4 holes later, she was topping up.

Had this thread been titled juniors, seniors, cat 4s, all the gear, left handers, smiffys, what ever, there would be the usual replies regarding stereo types.

I agree there are those "types" and there are for both genders and young and old alike. It feels like women in golf are the major target and the mickey-taking/generalisation as to our ability and behaviour on the course is way more prevalent than that directed at any others.

there was a junior golfer with me at callander, heather macrae.she is a few years older than me and stuck in at golf and played all the time.she had a excellent amateur career winning quite a bit, went out to the states to play college golf and turned pro a few years back and is now a fully qualified pga pro and playing some let events, she was as low as +3 when she turned pro.

That is without doubt the most sexist post I have ever read (albeit probably unintentional), so I'm presuming that in all your years of golfing you have never come across a male golfer who is a complete dick?

It is a bit of a catch 22. As long as the ladies section remains such a minority in golf club memberships, they will be viewed as different, and open to ridicule (as seemingly any minority in society is). If there were more of them, they would have to be more integrated, in terms of shared tee times, playing in swindles, etc, and the average male golfer would be less likely to be as biased in his opinions. But the ladies sections won't expand until more want to join, and they are often put off by the stereotypes (men and women).

Our ladies section is also full. But the numbers are ignificantly less than the numbers available for men.

Thing is, as an average male golfer, I probably play mixed golf less than once a year. There is one comp, on family day, where the field is mixed (and I will never, ever play in it again. It used to be a Shot gun, but now is drawn, tee times from 9 til 12, so I can play at 7.30), and also there is a chance of drawing female playing partners in another drawn comp, but it is rare.

Our Saturday swindle is an open roll up. We are allowed 36 players, and we have had 74 different players this year alone. This is 13% odd of the membership. In eleven years, we have never had a lady play. Why?

They need to integrate.

Yep, loads.

Given that my club has 500 odd male members (ooh, er, mrs), there are inevitably a fair number who I am not going to get on with, and that doesn't include people from societies, or from the forum here.

But, given a choice, I would rather play golf with some one who is a golfer. There are loads out there, male or female, who are not, and are just hogging a tee time. It isn't about handicap, or ability, but attitude.

That is the catch 22 for sure. I'm not the type to be intimidated easily and can hold my own in male dominated groups having once been called a "geezer chick" ! I like all sports, bit of a tomboy all my life etc etc. But...won't enjoy the clubhouse atmosphere after say a men's medal so won't go in. My first club used to always have mixed competitions but they were drawn and more than once I was out with guys who seemed to think I was a minor irritation and ignored me much of the time never mind chatting away after their tee shots and as I took mine. Then dashing off to their balls as I was stuffing my club back in my bag and jogging down the fairway after them. My only pleasure was in outdriving them and their reaction when they got to the first ball along the fairway assuming it would of course be mine...

So, would I join in the swindle?? Very unlikely. Would I be welcome to join?? Hmmm, probably also unlikely.

I don't know the answer but just get fed up of the general ridiculing etc regarding female golfers.

The fact that anyone feels the need to refer to gender instantly marks them as sexist. Why don't the lady members integrate more? Have you ever considered that it might be down to the ridiculous level of macho BS that is still inherent in our game? For example, what is wrong with a lady golfer hitting a piece of lumber from a distance that you are going to over hit a mid iron to?

My favourite golf partner is my wife, even if she does frequently lash it down the fairway (with a lovely draw) further than me. She's probably the only golfer who can laugh out loud at me duffing a 64* wedge without wearing the club as a necklace for the rest of the round

I guess I'm quite lucky in that we have 4 annual mixed trophy comps at my club, and I have always found the gents I've been drawn with to be most welcoming. The Captains also had Texas Scrambles for their Drive Ins/Outs this year - with each team having one member from Mens/Ladies/Seniors or Juniors. We have a Captain's 9 hole roll-up on summer evenings, and this is well supported by the ladies, we can also play in the pro-shop non-qualifying weekend stableford - and indeed, this was won by ladies on two occassions this year! Our Ladies section also has regular combined fun comps with the seniors.

Being fairly new to golf, I had assumed this was the norm at most clubs, but maybe not?

I guess this must refer to me, seeing as I wrote the OP.

The OP referred to a specific situation(s), is commenting on a fact classed as sexist in your book??

If there was any of my mates doing the same thing they would have had the same levels of disbelief aimed at them.

Lighten up.

I quite happily play with the women at our place ......they're a good laugh and on the whole, decent golfers.
I'm playing in a Texas scramble with 2 of them in a couple of weeks and we'll definitely have a good crack.

We also have a 3 h/c lady county player who plays in our Sunday swindle off the whites with the rest of us (although she does get a couple of extra shots). ......Hits it further than most of the guys!!!

Smiffy's not cheating.....that was his second shot!!!!!:D

Now that's funny

We have quite a few competitions open to men and women, as well as the usual mixed competitions. We also have ladies that play in our roll up on a Saturday. I was played in by a lady who is happy to play off the mens tees, so she can join in the banter more.
