Has anyone played any of the NW England links courses in winter?
Some friends and I are looking to have a few days golf and fancied Royal Liverpool, Fleetwood, St Annes Old Links....do these courses remain on proper greens and tees? none of this messing about with mats etc?

Hoylake does. HID's folks live down the road and we often walk along the shore past the course - but, believe me, watch out for the wind - it fair races across from Ireland and there's nothing to stop it. Sometimes you can stand at 45 degrees into it and not fall over.....

Some mates went to Wallasey last Thursday - in great nick for the time of year, as befitting most links courses. They can recommend the fish & chips in the clubhouse as well.

Fleetwood is about the best value, currently £25. St annes is well worth a trip, pure links, it always reminds me a little of St Andrews new course. Although not true links Fairhaven is a very good course, but also pretty tough.
But i would say the best ive played in the area is Hillside, its not cheap but its a course you wont forget, some very memorable holes.
Hesketh is overrated.

Agree re Hillside. Played in an open day in 2008, £40 each, great course with a fantastic back 9, which I believe Greg Norman has described as the best links 9 he has played.

Played Southport and Ainsdale last March, think we paid about 45 quid, that included a voucher for the bar afterwards. Course is VERY tough when the wind is blowing, round our course I usually shoot mid-low 80's and my mate mid 70's, think I shot 101 and he shot 90! :o

A word of caution on Hoylake if anyone is thinking of visiting - we are doing irrigation work this winter and also relaying the 17th green so there's a fair degree of disruption.

Fleetwood is OK but they often only have 14 holes open in the winter. Old Links is by far the best in the Fylde area (excluding Royal Lytham), always on tees and greens but a bit more expensive. Fairhaven's worth a visit too which although not right on the coast is still an Open qualifier, drains really well and offers a bit more shelter from the wind.
