Played at a mates club yesterday. Normally have some of the best greens in the area and are usually good thought the winter too. The greens had been top dressed with about an inch covering of sand and seed. Four putted inside 10 feet 3 times.

What work has you club done for the winter if any yet and what are they like?

Greens have been hollow tined all over, and drilled and filled in places. 13 bunkers have been taken out of play, 8 trees have been cut down, 2 new ones have been put in, 2 rhododendrons have been dug out and the ground repaired, and the fairways have been scarified. Not a bad start really.

Our greens were very good 2 winters ago and are shaping up to be the same this year. Weren't bad last winter considering.

Just don't miss them as there are some ugly lies from not far off. Mainly due to no trolly or buggy bans and people insisting on taking their bags up to the egde of greens in damp conditions. The amount of traffic we have added to this makes for some bad lies from only just off the green for a few months.

Who are you kidding?????

Patrick your forgetting I've seen you putt and to be honest I'm really surprised how well you putting must have come on if your only 4 putting now!

Ours were hollow cored and filled at the start of last month and were running really well but today for some reason they covered them in sand some looke like a beach ,which was a pain in the back end.

It was the same at Fortrose yesterday, like putting on the beach :p

With the Fortrose/Rosemarkie surroundings I feel sure the top dressing would only steal a wee bit of the enjoyment!

I think some of the worst greens I have ever putted on were Boat of Gartens last April. Terrible condition. I hope they fare better this winter

I think it is difficult to understand the amount of frost this area 'enjoys' over the winter months and the degree of recovery required by the greens. I would say that maybe later in the year is better than early on, for up around there.

I know from corporate members of Spey Valley that their entertaining months are much curtailed due to the growing season being so far behind the rest of the country.

Ours were pretty consistent on Saturday unlike my putting stroke and they haven't been tined or dressed. To be fair they don't usually go mad with the sand etc when they top dress but its usually the timing that is an issue (normally the day before a monthly stableford/medal)

I love that golf club, play it every year in June. Have actually seen Dolphins swimming alongside the course !!!

Our greens were hollow cored and sanded about a week and a half ago, the sand is still very much in evidence and the ball bobbling all over. Played Saturday and Sunday and everything in the bag is covered in sand, even my pockets were full of the stuff. Wish they would bother to tip some in the bunkers!

All the tee boxes are being levelled and re-turfed, a large section of fairway is being re-turfed and a greenside bunker filled owing to tree roots coming through. Removal of the bunker will make the hole much easier, which seems to me to be a bad move!

Hopefully the time and expense being spent will result in improving the course for the members :)

Our greens were hollow cored and sand filled last month and also in september. They are spiked every 3 weeks also....We dont play off any temporary greens during the winter

What our club does have a happy knack of doing is growing there own tree's...Apparently its cheaper than buying them in.....But her is the best bit.....One week you'll go up and the fairway is nice and wide begging to be bombarded off the tee with a driver.....The next week all of a sudden there are 12 to 15 trees at least 25-30 ft high planted and looking nice a shiney new in an area that the week before was minding your ball for you :D

We always play temps when there is a frost. Never at other times. I know some local clubs play on frozen greens, but personally i think they get damaged.

Ours were tined and dressed about 3 weeks ago, and they're not the best.

Played a scramble on Saturday and we only made 2 putts worth mentioning because the ball wasn't travelling the same 2 putts in a row from the same place.

Played at my local course on sunday and i have to say the greens and the general state of the course is alot better than some of the so called "up market" golf courses in the area with the exception of Rockliffe Hall but so it should be with the amount of money spent on it. I may be tempted to play there over winter, it's more expensive but they never use winter tees or greens and the course is more likley to still be open when alot of other course are closed.

the weekend before last ours were as good as they have been all year - running smooth and very fast at around 10.5ish - we do maintenance in the first week of August now, a lot earlier than we used to - meaning that they recover quicker.

Our greenkeepers like to Hallow tine when the season starts, ruining them in season for 2 months and then leaving us with 3 months of decent greens. The price we pay for council workers who are none golfers.
