Being the comp sec at our place, I thought I'd asked our Pro about putting a few comp on over the winter months.
His response was, and this is not word perfect...

The greenkeepers don't like winter comps, because if the weather is bad during the week then we'll get 60-70 people trundling around the course on comp day churning the course up.

??????? Beggars belief !

I'm going to organize some comps now. And I'm also going to insist that some comps I've sorted for next season, but he's decided to change the formats, (ie 3 man team game into a four man team game) "because the members won't play in a 3 man team game" , are put back to my original formats. I've decided, I'm either going to do it my way or not at all.

Can anyone suggest different type of comps they play over the winter month? I was going to do a two man scramble for one of them. Any other suggestions?

Why does the pro have any say in what events are on at the club?

He shouldn't, but because he ran the comps last year, due to our place not having a comp sec, hence me ending up with the post this year, and has helped my a lot this year, thinks he can change them to what he feels the member will want.....actually pandering to a certain few. Well it stops now !
So, winter comp suggestions please. Be as daft as you like.

Our Pro at Brancepeth Castle has a comp every weekend! He alternates them from 4BBB Medal and Stableford. But because its every week not much of a big uptake!

Personally if you had a winter medal once a month and another pairs one (alternate shots, better ball) you'll get more interested.

Also your pro is taking crap! Because surely the same number of people still play on the weekend anyways - furthermore the greenkeepers have no right to complain if people pay their memberships! The club should create winter rules to protect the course.

We had a cross country comp the other week, where we mixed holes, so 7th tee to 11th green for example. That was obviously just meant as a bit of fun, which it was.

How about a greenkeepers revenge, it keeps the green keepers and maybe the pro involved as well and is good fun for a one off

I would just highlight that we move comps from 3 ball to 4 ball at this time of year simply to accommodate all those that wish to play.

As to comps, I'm not a huge fan of using this time to introduce a whole load of Mickley mouse formats (I exaggerate for emphasis) but it's noticeable that people like to have an underlying structure eg first Sat of month is an individual stableford, second is a stableford greensomes, third free and forth a foresomes stableford.

However, be aware of other demands such as winter knockouts and or leagues. Given that people will wish to arrange these on reasonable weather opportunities it can create real issues when any sort of structured events are overlaid.

Good luck!

Bog standard eclectic competition, allows players to play as little or often as they like.

Stableford is a better and quicker winter game.
