Winter Balls

higher 'compression' balls (premium) in cold temps 45º-40º or lower (but it will start a way's before reaching this mark) lose the ability to deform on collision impact as much as they were designed to do at regular working temps, so they produce less ball speed, so less carry distance

folks would be little ways better moving to lower compression once the temps fall some - ground conditions will have little bearing on the outcomes, as both 'compression' will not run out on real wet ground - near frozen ground no real point being out there as what happens on landing remains a lottery whatever kinda ball

good amount of tour players if playing in cold desert temps will switch to a lower 'compression' ball - Lefty has often spoken to doing this a good number of times

temps around 40º you can easily lose a good 10 yards through both how the ball is able to 'work' plus denser cold air is a ways more difficult to 'fly' through

keeping the golf stuff in the trunk, garage, means the balls core temps already working against
you can't 'artificially' warm golf balls during play (in any sort of comp) but you can store them in warm place or place them on heating pipes before you start out - have 3, 2 in pocket & swap each tee box will give a little ways extra help over the first few holes or so

I'm reading conflicting opinions here, some are moving to a harder ball for the winter and some a softer one!

I know what you mean, did a little research last night and I think (probably wrong) there are 2 piece balls (hard) that have a low or soft compression, ie Wilson DX2.
The premium balls ProV etc are a lot more responsive were as the 2 piece aren't.

I brought a box of Callaway Chrome Truvis on Friday for Saturday's game and made it very easy to find them in the leaves, they look a bit strange ( like a football ) but will be buying another couple of boxes as I find them easy to hit.

Yes! For sure.

Different balls, different driver and different putter too.

Lower compression, higher loft (for the carry) and big fat mallet. :)

Been pretty impressed with the Wilson DX2 Soft after two rounds this weekend. They feel nice in the lower temperatures and I'm exactly as bad as putting as I always am. Thumbs up so far.

It was a bit misty when I arrived at the course yesterday so I treated myself to a sleeve of yellow balls out of my winning Pro shop credits, the only ones he had were Callaway Supersoft, and I have to say, I was stripping them down the fairways, in-fact we had 2 shortened par 4's due to the river bursting its banks which were both 260 yards to the centre of the green and although I wasn't on the green, on the 3rd I was in the front greenside bunker and on the 13th I was on the left pin high just off the green by 15ft! They felt great off the tee and I was surprised how nice they felt off the putter also. It was rather cold at first and very damp and they seemed ideal, not sure how they'd play in higher temps but they certainly get my vote for wintery conditions.

I use 'em all the time Robin. Good balls.

Very good winter ball, I use them regularly and they're long....
Not enough spin for me when it's firm but at the moment they're perfect.
