After a 14 month sabbatical from drinking wine (red) I'm after suggestions for a nice bottle of smooth red to have Xmas day.
Prefer something from supermarket that I can get easily but the thread may evolve as people add suggestions.

Over to you ?

what did you like before? young, old, light, heavy, rich, fruity, dry, sweet etc etc?

wine really is about personal taste despite what most so called experts want to tell you, so without giving a better steer all youre going to get is what others like

I don't claim to have any great knowledge about wine. Normally I buy a bottle that has a picture of an animal on the label and costs between £5 and £7. But I had my dad and stepmum over for dinner a couple of days ago. My dad brought a bottle of 19 Crimes red wine with him which was very enjoyable.

Also not much of a connoisseur, but have 2 massive favourites:
Ravenswood Zinfandel - Tesco £12
Terre di Faiano organic Primitivo - Waitrose £7.50
Both very smooth but punchy and big on the berry flavours.

This is a potential minefield, bit like telling someone to buy a Sim2 driver cos mine is awesome. As stated it is so subjective. I could list dozens of reds that I like but you might think are crap. I suggest you find your local Majestic and pop in for a chat, they have a few sample bottles open you can try.

FWIW, I like bold reds similar to the zinfandel/primitivos (same grape) listed above. If that is your taste try The Guv'nor or any of the Portuguese reds from the Douro region made from the touriga nacional grape.

A minefield indeed! It's normally been a time for something special for me, though this year has been a bit different as hip replacement has meant I'm restricted to very local 'expeditions' (and mail order that normlly involves multiple bottles).
For something a bit special, Beronia Rioja Reserva (around £15 normally, currently reduced to 11.99 at Waitrose and Tesco) would be my recommendation, though I find it difficult to see past Tesco Finest Argentinian Malbec. Stonking good wine (smooth yet bright) at a great price (£8)! Tivento is also pretty good (same price?) if the TFAM shelves have been cleared!

The Chocolate Block. It’s a South African job, but very smooth. Usually found in Waitrose, or Costco if you have access.

Barolo. You will get a decent bottle in one of the supermarkets for around £15. Light years ahead of the cheap and cheerful stuff posted above.

Now here’s one for the wine folk. I to will be having a red ( Barolo) with my Turkey and Gammon Xmas day. But the purists will be saying white wine with white meat. It always seems to be wine follows food. Me I don’t subscribe to that.
Thoughts me dears

My only recommendation is to buy 6 bottles of whatever you choose?

I had 2 bottles of Lomas Del Marques 2015 Rioja last week, beautiful stuff and about £9 from M&S, highly recommemded.

You've got a week to try some of the suggestions ?

Sound advice, I like your thinking?

I learnt the hard way a few months ago, bought 1 bottle to try and it was delicious.

Schoolboy Error. Never again.

I now buy 2 bottles of whatever im trying. If i dont like it ill make gravy with it ?
