Evening chaps, just got a fancy new laptop with windows 8 for the Mrs to help her with work and after a couple of hours of setup and pottering about, I'm ready to throw it out the window!

Does anyone know how to shutdown a laptop with windows 8??? When I select shutdown, it just restarts or hangs and does nothing???

Help, mercy, or a rope and stool.

Many thanks

Pretty much the same here. Not a big fan of W8, but I don't suppose Microsoft will reverse their thinking any time soon. The "Blue" update (Service Pack?) enables more customisation so I'm hoping they'll have listened to the public and made it a bit more desktop friendly.

Microsoft & Apple are both heading for one unified OS to fit the tablet & desktop.

Just checking but you do know to put the cursor in the bottom right corner, menu appears, then go to settings and select shutdown? If you're doing that and it won't sutdown then I would look at taskbar to see what's running, close anyhting there and try again. If still not shutting down your OS is needing some attention - virus maybe?

...With only putting the laptop in sleep mode, what do you do about auto updates?

You can change the auto update settings to suit you. You ideally want "Download but let me choose whether to install them" option.

Press the Windows Key (Win Logo next to left Ctrl key) +R to open a run dialog box and type "control.exe /name Microsoft.WindowsUpdate", then click "Change Settings".

You can change the settings in there to one of these:
Install updates automatically -> the recommended option, but will also wake at 0300, install them & reboot if needed.
Download updates but let me choose whether to install them -> self-explanatory, probably what you want.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
Never check for updates - not recommended unless you have good system of keeping on top of your updates yourself.
