Long story short I reistalled Windows 7 onto my laptop as it was running rubbish and put in a bigger HDD. Went to get the code off the back and it's worn away so badly I can't read it.
Is there any way to get Microsoft to tell me what it is or do I have to buy another copy of Windows 7 to get a code?
I'm not a happy bunny right now!!!

You should be able to get it by going to the System/Product Id panel/area of Control Panel.

At least that's where I remember it being - as I've upgraded to 10.

Best thing is to download and run a free program called Belarc Adviser .
It lists all hardware, software including product codes

Google is your friend :)

Would do as I've used Belarc on many other peoples PCs but I formatted the disc before I removed it so I could dispose of it without worry of anyone getting personal information from it. I did connect it to my PC as an external and ran recovery software but it's not picking up the code!
Not happy with myself on this one and it's typical I've done it with my own gear!

In that case , you are probably stuffed :(

As its a laptop, sometimes the windows code sticker is under the battery, try removing and take a peek. Long shot I know.

Did you create a backup disc or do you just have the W7 cd?

No I just did it on the Windows 7 disc I have.
I'll have a look under the sticker and see what I can see.
thanks for the help but I've to a feeling I'm going to be very deeply in the dog house later.

Sorry to take this off topic but my question relates to this post so rather than start a new thread.

My laptop has Windows 7 Home and I'm tempted to upgrade to 10. However I've seen a lot of horror stories particularly in relation to Word files.

I'm currently in the middle of an important and major longish-term Word-based project and wonder if I ought to complete this before taking the plunge.

Any advice?

What version of office do you have and do you still have the install disc and key code?

The last full version of Office I have is 2003 but I have been using the laptop's pre-installed Office 2010 Starter for this project.

I have the original Key for the 2003 version of Offce and also the laptop's key regarding the Office 2010 Starter is on the underside of the laptop (Acer)

Hijack away as I think I have all the info I need and it's not gone down well with HID. If I'm lucky I'll get out of this with one knacker still intact!

Office 2003 will work, but you need to download the 2007 office comparability tool to enable you to read docx etc files, as 2003 just does Doc files.

Not sure that office starter will work on 10, it was a windows 7 only product and wasn't supported (didn't work) with Win 8 at all :(

Cheers Phil,

Think I'll maybe leave it until I finish what I'm doing. Copy it all to 2003 and download the 2007 compatibility tool and see what that yields.

Although thinking abiut it I do have another laptop running 7 so perhaps I can do the upgrade to 10 on that, email the Word document in 2010 and see if the upgraded laptop can then read it. That may tell me what's what then.

Thanks for info.
