Why do other clubs in europe use and measure in meters, its really confusing. Should there be a universal unit? Or leave it as it is? Meters and Yards.

Not hard is it though, you add 10% on meters to get the yardage. I understand what you are saying though.

Didn't 'they' try to make it uniform years ago ?
To get everyone ( IE us troublemakers ) to convert to meters ?
So when Peter Alliss was commentating he started talking about people being so many PACES off the green etc, until all this damn foolery was given up.

They introduced metres in clubs here about thirty years ago. I am pleased that it did not stick.
It's not the europeans that are auckward, its us. We wont give up our miles for kilometres, our pints for litres, our yards for metres, our feet and inches. I think it's only us and the yanks that use the old imperial system.
I bet in school your tought metric rather than imperial, so you should be able to convert quickly in your head
or you could buy one of those GPS thingies that can be set for yards or metres....
Just off to the DIY store for a length of 4" x 2"........or should I say 100mm x 50mm?

You were right first time.
I'm happy either way although I'm sure it would take some getting use to mentally standing there telling yourself the club you have is still right.

Just add ten percent, and you are near enough.
Interestingly, if you buy hose pipe, they sell it in metric lengths, but it is still 1/2" diameter. Confusing?

When in rome do as the romans do.
Its metres in the majority of Europe so the UK are the ones out of step, so to speak.
We have changed our road speeds to kilometres without an hitch as the metric system has been taught in our schools for over 30 yrs.
However our golf courses are 50/50 between yds & metres. Courses geared towards the Yankee tourist are in yds, including my own course, whilst other courses are in metres.
Just add 10% to the metric distance to get the yardage.

The same applys with wire netting. It now comes in metric rolls (10m, 20m etc) but is 18", 24", 36" high.The reason being, and I think this applies with your hose, is because the machine that manufactures it doesn't need to be changed, only the length it is cut. When the current machinery becomes worn out, it will be replaced with metric ones.
Incidentally, my kids were all taught metric at school, but they measure their height in feet and inches.

I recon the reason for the government allowing a conversion from Gallons to Litres, is so they can put up petrol by 2p a litre & make it seem like they haven't put the price up by near enough 10p a gallon, when that's exactly what they've been doing.
I Like my gallons, I still work out mpg, so why do I have to fill up in litres.
I like using feet & inches. I remember when we went over to decimal coinage it was just when I was starting to get my head around punds shillings & old pence. I was just getting used to how many inches were in the foot & how many feet there were in the yard. Then I needed to learn how to convert my feet & yards into metres & my inches for centemetres etc.
I am perfectly happy filling my car up with gallons, driving for miles, ordering my sweets in quarters, buying my sugar & flour in Lb's, doing my cooking in Lb's & oz's & cups. Drinking pints, Running a 50 yard dash for the bus, I prefer to know its 70F degrees out there in the sun than 20C... brrr. Okay so when its cold I'm happy to use 0 - 12 C.... And I definitly like playing golf over yards.
I am 15 stone, 5 foot 8 inches tall, I have no intention to quote how heavy I am in Kilo's though I can easily do it, by converting the meassurements, or switching the scales over to metric. And I supose I could quote metres & centemetres, how tall I am, but whay the heck should I, I'm British.
But even though I know the metric system, the old imperial system worked & the imperial measures, were nice chunky comfortable things to use. & I really think Europe could gain a lot from taking on at least certain of the old imperial system, they'd never go back if they did, even though it might take them a little while to get their heads around, but if 5 year old kids can do it, then so can anyone.

What i hate is one course is yards to the front the next is metres to the centre the next is yards to the centre from the 150 markers.

Mind you talking about when in Rome, just imagine if we were still meassuring in Leagues & cubits...
Actually it would be interesting to actually have to do that sort of thing for a month....
