We all know this game is stupid so why do we play it and why did you start.
Some play because they saw it on the TV
Some play because friends or family play
Some play because work colleagues play
Why did you start?

For me, I was born in Dunfermline where golf is everywhere and both my parents played so I gave it a go. Still trying after 40 years :D

My dad played and I found the clubs in the garage one day and wanted to have a go. He was great in that he took me for a course of lessons first so started on a very firm foting in terms of the basics. I'd practice at the range with him and eventually he got me junior membership. Having somewhere to play and learn by your mistakes on the course was essential and bit by bit I improved. Funnily enough the more I got into it the less he played and now he's gone I really miss not being able to even have a proper hack somewhere.

I did a piece a few years ago which GM published about our first ever game on an 18 hole course which sort of summed it all up. Without his influence I think it would have been a passing phase and I'd have stuck to football and cricket.

When I was a kid we'd go to Exmouth in the summer hols, and in the evenings my Dad and I would knock it round the pitch and putt before picking up fish and chips for the girls on the way home. As I got older, we'ed stop off at the pub on the way home. It grew from that though. Never had lessons, my Dad was from the age of the talented amateur. You'd either pick it up yourself, or pack it in.

I had to stop playing rugby due to injury and needed a competitive sport to replace it with. A few people I know played golf so I gave it a try and was hooked.

We joined Belton Woods in Lincolnshire as Leisure members when it first opened, I think we were one of the 1st 100 members, and my dad became a member of the golf club and started taking me to the range around 8 years old...And I got my first set of Howson's not long after.

18 years later, I still can't play very well :(

As a keen sportsman I was always destined to play golf. After football till about 30 years old and injured, and then 10 years of competitive tennis, I tried golf and hit a couple, out of about 120 shots, that went like the pro's on tv hit the ball and, that was it, hooked forever!

Nothing really inspired me to try golf. I just knew that after 30 years, I'd had enough of yacht racing, and wanted to play an individual sport and not a team sport. I'd also dabbled a bit 20 years ago.

I used to play squash and table tennis to a reasonably competitive level in my early teens, so I figured that golf shouldn't be too hard. After all the ball is static isn't it!!

where did you play in Dunfermline, Bob?
:) we lived next to Canmore - poor relation to most of the others. I had 3 junior clubs and a natty bag from the golf factory at the corner of our street but never got the hang of it. Many years later and south of border went to a trial lesson to encourage Mr B to have a hobby as I was always out playing tennis. Got hooked, gave up tennis. The rest is history. ;)

Got injured during the first Gulf War in '91 and couldnt play contact sports anymore. My mate said try golf so I did and the rest is history. Damn game grabs you by the balls and wont let go , i've tried giving it up but it's too hard to let go :(

pure chance - I was working in malaysia and had a spare afternoon at the end of the job. the guys I was working with were members at a local course and invited me to join them - got hooked almost immediately, at least the second shot.

and to think they could have invited me to Madamme Lu's all night laundry and massage parlour!

How do you not notice the golf course in St. Andrews???

That is like not noticing the empire state building or missing the statue of liberty in New York...

Just wandered down a pitch and putt when I was 18 and enjoyed it so gave it a go. Didn't take golf that seriously 10 years ago until I retired from playing baseball over here.

always loved the game, but never played it,saw the likes of
faldo, woosnam, langer, and of course seve breaking american
hearts in the masters and thought it was fantastic, started
playing five years ago at the age of 55 and play at least
twice a week.the last 8 days Ive had 6 rounds..you could say
Ive got the bug

took it up as a sociable sport both me and my dad could play, snooker got very boring after a while and he's too old to play football. so golf it is. :D

I first picked up a club with my mates playing on the school field.Got the bug big time and when everyone else stopped i carried on.

Stopped for a few years when beer and girls took over but i always knew i would be back

I used to have to go to my grans at weekends and i was always really bored :(. I noticed there was a golf course about 2 minutes away so i decided to join. I noticed i was half decent at the game and made good friends at that club. Now ive moved club and still chopping it around......got to love this stupid game ;)

I play because of Pontins - no really. Can't remember where it was, but I was a young loon on holiday with the folks as you do, and they had what I thought was an excellent pitch and putt course, and I was hooked.

Wherever we went on holiday I always wanted to play the pitch and putt, or crazy golf, so no TV influence or whatever, it was the game itself that drew me.
