at the Valero one of the Aussie players caught a spectator in the side of the head - no shout of fore.

one of the pundits (former pro - don't know his name) reckoned that if they hit a loose one the pros won't shout 'as they use the gallery as a backstop'

he also advocated a $50,000 fine

(the spectator didn't make a big thing of it)

Iresponsible and dangerous.
Ok, they'll be well insured but that's not the point.
And it's not ok to say that you're at a golf tournament and you should expect balls flying around the place. The players have a duty of care and most of them don't stick to it.
Fine'em - fine'em bad!!

I've also noticed this a lot lately, i've seen Tiger shout fore, i've also seen Cink & Donald do it, however I dont recall seeing many others!

They generally point to whichever side the shot is leaking but IMHO this isnt enough.

I say fine em too!

When us mere mortals are playing and there are no spectators on the course, then the chances of a direst hit on another player are obviously much reduced, (unless my power slice is working), it is part of the etequette to warn others of a stray one.

But on a crowded course with thousands of spectators milling around, the danger is much increased, You could argue that a warning wouldnt be heard that far away with the background hubbub, but they should still attempt a warning if people are in danger. Not to do so is negligent.

I watched the highlights of the masters on Iplayer, (having been away and missed the whole masters) and there was one hole where the spectators were in a dip right across the fairway, They couldnt be seen from the tee and players just drove right over their heads.

If the players couldnt see the fans, then the fans couldnt see the players, so wouldnt know when a shot was coming their way, You only have to duff a drive and its going into a crowd and that to me is just plain stupid.

Also there were several instances, particularly playing out of the woods, where the edge of the crowd was encroaching on the line of the shot, rather than moving the fans back, they just played over their heads. Its not only dangerous, but isnt it offputting for the players?

They should have a bloke on each hole with a whistle, and he blows it and signals left or right if a shot is heading for the crowd. That way the pros dont need to worry and the punters are warned.

Fragger

I remember Woosie at an Open at St Andrews asking a camera buggy to back up a bit from where it was sitting on the raised dune about 80 yards ahead of him.

Rather like the way we check the marker on the green is not on our line, he moved the buggy another foot to the right, played a long iron into the heart of the green and missed the buggy by a FOOT!!

This must have been some camera shot and I can imagine all the fans at home diving for cover as the ball hurtled towards their G & T - waiting for the call of FORE!

Isn't that on either the 4th or 6th, both par 3's?

Now imagine THAT shot on Sky 3D! :D

hoping the ball hits the spectator and bounces back into play instead of going into the bushes, take points of them, money wont hurt them,
average joes spend a lot of money to get into golf events and should be treated with a bit of respect

I say don't fine them, the impact of the fine is hardly anything is the amounts at stake in today's game.

Instead impose a 3 stroke penalty for endangering people. I'm sure then they would definitely shout fore. A 1 stroke penalty isn't much , a 2stroke penalty can be recovered from for a pro a triple bogey (effectively) is a scary thing.

And if the do it twice in a comp DQ them.
