WE were running a Charity Golf Competition 4 man team £50 entry fee at our Club. I was in charge and at 10 a.m. a guy phones up and says one of the team has to go into hospital and cannot make it and they need to cancel and can they have their money back. They were playing at 2'oclock the same day.

I did not take the initial call but found someone to play in the team and phoned him back thinking he would be delighted.

Quite the opposite and he still wanted his money back to which I refused. He then wrote a letter quoting his 'Job Title' for effect. The rest of the Committee are now considering a partial refund (Whimps)which has annoyed me intensley.

Why do people act this way and why can they not just accept the decision and move on with life? If someone does not turn up for a Club Comp they still have to pay. There is no difference

More importantly it was a charity event. I would be holding a Committee meeting to discuss he's future in the club, and also advise him that he's job title means f-all when it comes to committing to events and pulling out at the last minute.

What was this impressive 'job title' then?

Thought someone may ask that one

Without prejudice and no disrespect to anyone of a similar profession on here!

He was a solicitor for a Company and added this on the bottom of the email so that we would quake in our shoes.

I have not slept for 3 days!!!

So he is a solicitor and simply cannot afford 12.50 which is going to a charity.

Sounds like a lovely bloke to have in the club, far to far up he's own arse. I would make people aware of this, it may be very hard in future for him to find playing partners

Typical... I'd love to see him take you to court for not giving him back his £12.50 "charitable donation".

The man's clearly a knob and gives the profession a bad name. Refuse a refund. There's nowt he can do and he knows it, hence the bluster with the title drop. You more than satisfied your end of the bargain by making the tee time available and offering a different team mate. You don't want people like that in your club.

It's usually the ones with money that are the tightwads!

Most committees are spineless and that is why they would suggest a partial refund - I would propose that you offer them a voucher to play the course at a later date and say that surely they wouldn't want the charity to suffer as you had already advised them of the amount of donation!
