Why are Trade in Prices so bad?

Missed this thread in March

Was window shopping on PC today and saw AG pushing for trade in etc so looked up the PGA value guide they use out of curiosity....trade in for all 17 of my clubs wouldn't cover the cost of a single new club!

I know why re the resale, vat, etc etc I just found it depressing :(
Not that I have an AG round here

Seems to be another reason to buy 2nd hand!

Can anyone explain what has really changed in the last year, or even 2 or 3, that can justify spending £250 on a new Driver? Or £400-500 on new irons?

Let someone else take the huge value hit!

Last 2 or 3 more like the past 14 years! ;) false promises with the new equipment and peer pressure forces people to buy it, go out and buy a 10 year old driver for £25 and you'll hit it just as well and far.

In irons, I'd agree - in spite of TM's marketing. Putters, probably, though there have been a lot more designs and there's a shape/style for everyone out there somewhere.

Drivers have certainly improved since 2000, but not much in the last few years.

Wedges can probably do with being replaced every few years anyway, even though it's an likely to be an illusion that the grooves are getting worn.

if you hit it in the sweet spot every time then probably yes. But if like the vast majority of golfers your strike is inconsistent then drivers now offer more forgiveness/distance on off centre hits.
