Who's the biggest?

I've read a couple of posts recently with guys saying that they're off 23, but play more like 13 or 14, but because they don't play in comps, they don't get cuts... Well - tell the hcap sec, and he'll adjust it for you, job done. I couldn't hold me head up if I was playing off 10 more than what I could play at...

Remember, the hcap is meant to be what you play on a GREAT day, not what you hit every week. So in fact, a hcap of 23 mean you should really be hitting about the 27-28 mark regularly...

Last year I was hugely inconsistent, especially in the comps, therefore my handicap would drop and gradually rise again. Much more consistent this year (so far lol), but despite a 3rd, 2nd, 1st and 4th in the comps this year there have been no cuts.

I for one want to get my handicap down as low as possible, to me that will be the indication of improvement, not how well I do in club comps!

On my day (and I mean on my day ) I can be a fairly consistent 12 handicapper. But usually I'll go out and anything around 30 points or so I'll take. Occasionally I may have the odd 36 pointer but it's very rare.
24 points on the back 9 for a 17 handicapper is three over gross (even being kind and assuming he is getting his "odd" shot on the back 9). I'd poop myself if I was shooting this kind of score but other people just seem to accept it with a smile and get annoyed when they are not doing it every time. It's the kind of score I can only dream about.
There are ways and means to get your handicap down other than playing in qualifiers. I've done it in the past. A good secretary will look at all cards and will adjust accordingly if they feel the player concerned is being honest.
I don't wear the "not official competition" excuses sorry.

To be fair though every club has them and you mostly know who they are at your place. They are the ones you are desperate to avoid in the knockout as you know they'll get strokes and then stroll the first nine in about 3 over. I'd rather get drawn against a low single figure guy any day of the week.

you know they'll get strokes

Like being one down to Hywel on the last at Lewes, fairly straightforward par 4, not particularly long but SI8 and he's shotting....
You know for a fact that he is going to par it because he has been stonking the ball all the way round, so you are on the tee facing the fact that you have got to make eagle to stand any chance of winning the hole. Birdie won't do. Not this time!
You drive, he drives. You are left with a 6 iron in, he is hitting 9 'cos he's just outdriven you by 30 yards or more......cushty.
:( :( :( :( :(

Is it that adjustments are suspended for the winter though? Is that why there have been no cuts, or just that you've shot buffer zone every time in those comps?

If its the first, then depending on what you've shot, you should be telling the sec to cut you to 20, 18, or whatever seem appropriate.

Not if its been winter tees/temp green though - they usually bring better scores...

Erm based on todays round I might just have to throw my sombrero in and say me :D

But seriously though I couldn't feel any more ashamed/ guilty about it.

Since I was given my H/C I have only had chance to play in one comp (and I didnt even play to 19) but my game has come on leaps and bounds from the work and bounce games I have played since.

What do I do? Play in comps to get it down and fear being lynched in the bar afterwards?

Yes Tony thats the only way you are going to get cut,i said some time ago you will get to single figures within two years of joining your club and i still think that but your not going to get there without entering comps. let them call you a bandit dont feel guilty about it.Its ok to say I'm off so and so but i'm playing much better, do it in comps and get your handicap down.

I have been playing much better and more consistantly, yesterday 16 hole comp 35 points none qualifier but I will be speaking to the handicap sec.

good luck mate.

Bandit.
Lots of people claiming to be playing well under their handicaps, so who is the biggest bandit and how?

In all honesty I think I am a Bandit every time it all comes togeather in a match. Mind you, I dont think I am as bad as many Bandits I have had to play against. I nearly always play to or under my h/c in practice rounds and in many friendlies the same, though not as often, but in matches I dont manage it so often these days as I used to but just enough to keep around the same h/c.

So I claim only minor Bandit status. ;)
