I guess Ian Baker Finch is up there but I personally think that any golfer who wins a major has to be fairly special.

All had to play better than the field to win it. Probably Paul Lawrie was luckiest (rather than worst) due to Van der Velde's capitulation

At the end of the day though it is about performing for four days. I'm sure there are plenty (Monty, Westwood etc) who would have preferred to be described as the worst major winner
I think it is the other way, one major wont pay the bills forever.
Yes it would be awesome to be known as a major winner, but to be a consistent player who one day wins a major would be out of this world.

Andy North won three US PGA titles in his whole career, and two of them were the US Open. Not sure what my point is but thought i would be a clever Dick.
Winning multiple majors is successful though. He did play in the Ryder cup and successfully lost all three games.

Just curious as to why so any have a downer on Paul Lawrie. he shot the round of the day (-4) in horrendous conditions to set the mark and had to wait a fair while for van de Velde and Justin Leonard to match it. He won a three man play off.
Shooting the lowest round on the last day of any Open is not bad going in my book.
Okay, maybe he hasn't chased the limelight like some players who have won majors since then, but, I'd say he comes across as a decent bloke and he's got his name on the greatest trophy in golf, so what does he care ?

i think ben curtis won a few times in the US, and also had a couple of other top 10s in the Open - I can certainly remember him coming close a couple of times after his win.
He also played in a winning ryder cup team - not exactly a dreadful player.
Dont get me wrong DCB, Im sure there are a lot more deserving guys out there for this title, Mr Lawrie (In my opinion, remember these are like bumholes, everyone has one!) just never seemed to get the momentum going after this win when a lot of other seemed to prosper.
I know the guy does a lot of good work and has his foundation etc, he just does not do it for me as a watchable, successful player. With regards to the Open win, he was never in front in his 72 holes, the field came back to him, partly testament to his final round but also to the inability of the other guys to close out.
