Who is the better golfer?

Smiffy has a mate who has the cheapest set of clubs going but can play great with them and he could come up against a guy with some decent gear. They are both off 10 and so the match is played off a level playing ground. I would say equipmenmt would have nothing to do with it and its simply a case of who got the ball in the hole quicker.

If you are taking a longer term view, the guy that hasn't had lessons and worked at their game potentially has the room to progress quicker but there is the counter-argument that working too hard and getting some technical input maky stifle the natural ball striking ability. Isn't that what happened to Seve to a large degree. He ended up seeing so many coaches he lost that natural flair.

Was it not seve's back that went ? That's what I thought anyway.

Following on from the talent thread:

Two golfers, both playing off a 10 handicap.

Player A plays with a tour model driver with a 440cc head, in a traditional shape. He has a set of blades, 2 to sw, and a bladed putter. He has a nice looking swing that is the product of coaching and hard work on the practice ground.

Player B has a 460cc offset square headed driver, 3 hybrids, a set of offset irons with massive perimeter weighting in 5 to sw, a chipper, and a putter that wouldn't look out of place on Star Trek. He has never had lessons, does not practice, and has a swing that looks like an octopus falling out of a tree.

Which is the better golfer?
As the only metric available is handicap, then both same.

And, apart from both them both being scratch players, I know of 2 guys who pretty much match these guys!
1 plays with a TM300 Tour driver (about 320ccs!) Miura Baby Blades 3-PW (CB201 2-iron) and Vega wedges. Putter is a Newport 2. something though. The Other plays Cally FT-iz Driver, Razr Tour irons, Vokeys and a Spider putter. Both great players, but I think the 'old-school/golf should be hard' player is probably leaving a couple of shots out there on good ball-striking days and a couple more on bad ones!

Handicaps tell the story for me im afraid.....Although if you judged solely on seeing their swing and not knowing their handicaps then im sure the majority would pick player A......

But both being off 10 then each has their own faults that seem to cancel the other one out!

I play on a Friday with two mates. It's just a friendly stableford, loser buys the drinks and we adjust handicaps each time based on: Winner goes down one, loser goes up a shot, middle stays the same.

Two of us have fairly classic golf swings and one has a swing like an Octopus putting up a deckchair. The latter can score really low. He seems to hit everything dead straight, rolls the ball up to the hole from within 150 yards with a low running daisy cutter and never misses a putt from within 5 feet. His problem is that his game can go to hell in a hand cart sometimes, it only takes one of the dozen or two compensations he makes to fail for it to go horribly wrong.

Back to the OP's question: Without any further information I would plug for 'A' His swing would probably stand up better over time.

you can trace Seve (and a few other well known pros')'s decline to the point he got married and had kids

Not surprising

Happened to Tiger most recently as well

Happens in other sports as well - as soon as you give away a bit of your "selfishness" by starting to look after kids (and possibly wives) then some of the focus goes

Happens in professional careers as well

Bad backs dont help - i would be winning the Masters if it wasn't for my bad back and family

Read an excellent book last year about the great Walter Hagen. He played a number of challenge matches against Bobby Jones and often came out on top.

Jones of course had the beautiful swing and played golf the classic way. Hagen was self taught, flamboyant and sprayed it all over the place but somehow got the ball in the hole. Jones used to hate being beaten by Hagen and apparently said "When a man misses his drive, and then misses his second shot, and then wins the hole with a birdie, it gets my goat".

Hagen said "three of those and one of them still count four."

Who was the better golfer?

For anyone who thinks that golf and golfers were dull and boring before Arnie and Seve it is worth reading a bit about the "The Haig".

Yes that's a story i quote most often on the course "Crap Shot, Crap Shot, Crap shot, Good shot is still a Par 4" :)

Another good book to rea dif you can get your hands on it is Sam Snead's autobiogra[hy - " A golfer's educatioN" - now there was a character and an astonishing golfer
I'm happy to lend it to anyone (but i want it back - one of my favourites)
