Who has a coach?

Been with my coach for 2-3 years now.

Has taken me from 5.6 to 2.7 which I'm pretty pleased with. Still making some fairly big changes but I trust him, and he teaches in a way I digest well

Great progress, my compliments!

Have you mainly worked on swing and mechanics?
Or looked at a bit of everything?

I'm interested as I only work on my swing with my coach (aside from playing 9-holes with him, I finished -1 and he was level, but I learned a few things!)

I have a coach, Barry Taylor, who I try and see for a lesson once a month. Has done wonders for my game. When I started with him last year I didn't have an official handicap but was playing to around 23. Now, a year later I have an official handicap of 14.9 and Barry is pushing me to get to single figures this year. Shot 80 a couple of weeks ago (which included a triple) so getting there, just need to put some good rounds together at the start of the season to get the confidence going.

thanks a lot.

I mainly have swing lessons with him on trackman, but probably have 2 or 3 short game lessons a year too.

to be honest though i am at the stage now where i have a good base for my swing, so its all about taking 2 steps forward and then most likely 1 back.
I'll turn up to the lesson and we discuss how i've been doing etc, what i've been struggling with and then go from there.

It goes without saying that its more effective early on. It helps prevent bad habits forming which become much more difficult to delete as you get older/play longer. Would be interesting to see what people pay/hour across the country.

Yep.. Matt belsham, he's Alex noren's coach... although my hands don't look like his 🤓🤗

The difference between an average coach and a "tour level" coach has been a revelation

I've had a lesson recently hence the question and I'm considering going whole hog in an effort to get to 9 and then all being well 5 which I think is an aim but maybe a bit far for me, off 12 currently and not young by any means at 44. It would be nice to get to cat 1 once before I turned 50

If I can then you can do it.
I'm same age and come from 15 to 8. And had a knee op (#don'taskaboutDodge) and a neuro disorder... probably spent more time in hospital than playing!
I have however worked on it pretty hard, I practice with a swing caddie sc200, and do a "test" in pretty much every session. Practice under pressure.
I play with game golf, and recently went to Harold Swash for putting.
I will stop at nothing - my aim is to shoot a level par in a cup/medal competition. Got a 76 last year, so 75 is my next goal...

How is the SC200? I am tempted to get one but keep reading bad reviews about them not picking up many swings and bad data.

I go to one of our assistant Pros but not with any regularity.

We worked on a few things this time last year and they came to fruition because I was cut in our very first Comp, won 2 comps and played pretty much to that cut for the season, which seeing as he made a further major change to my swing a couple of months into the season I was happy with that.

I'm having a refresher in a couple of weeks, a bit like a MOT which will tweak a few things no doubt but I've already come 2nd in a team comp this year and won some good roll-ups so with a bit more consistency infected through a pre-season lesson I hope to come down at least another 3 shots 👍 although there's quite a few at my club want me cut more 😳🏌️

If I knew how to attach a screen shot I could show you my "Approach" stats, I now "gain 0.14 vs. Scratch" - strongest part of my game, by some margin.
I use the SC200 to work on wedge shots mostly, also using tests and keep records of my scores.
It's got different modes to help you do that, giving you marks out of 10 (+1 bonus) per shot over 10 shot tests.

The device itself is basic, but a proper accurate doppler radar will set you back a fortune!
Yes it misses a few swings if not set up perfectly, and it's not that accurate, it won't be for the low tech (low price).
But in reality, is that really a problem for an amateur at my level?
Well, I don't think so, and under pressure I'm performing pretty well, so in my opinion, faults aside, it's helping me.

The thing with approach shots is how close you can consistently hit it to the pin (proximity <15yards) from a variety of lies and conditions.
This helps tidy things up in range conditions, but it's never going to do it all for you, you still have to "play".
Using it has helped me learn to visualise a shot for the correct yardage.

Think I paid about £100 with a discount, so the #2's I make have already paid for it, several times over.
I find I'm nicer to myself with the device, whereas I'd give myself far less if self evaluating.
Get one, have some fun with it, if it doesn't work out for you flog it on eBay or something.
Don't leave batteries in it!

I still get my coach to use TrackMan for proper testing with Driver etc. Now that is a hell of a device!

I am just a beginner but I now go to a great teaching Pro at a different club to my own for an hour weekly and intend to keep doing that for a long time! I'm only learning but I have seen huge improvements since I found someone who I felt was coaching me not just watching me and giving tips as did a previous Pro. He has written notes ready for my lesson, has a long term plan for our work together, he uses video of me as he teaches and then I will film the video replay on my phone while he commentates on it so I can take home visuals of what I have learned and need to work on. Or I can film him demonstrating. I get practice drills for between lessons.. I am no natural golfer ( or sportsperson if any kind) but I really enjoy working with him. I like knowing that he is slowly and painstakingly getting the fundamentals right for me. I'd rather take the time to work with him and get it right than try to bumble along alone.

I've got a coach. A 1 hour lesson every month on either what I feel needs working on or something the coach has spotted worth fixing/certain shots.

After every 3 lessons, there is a 9 hole playing lesson and the cycle repeats.

Plus always around at the range for quick advice etc
