In the latter case, I suspect a combination of knowing he had no chance and the bout not actually being that level of marketable. The former is harder - I guess it amounts to doing well enough in Germany without having to fight someone who could hit him before he saw the punch.

The same could apply to so many boxers, especially in the 90s and 2000s.
