Gents,

Last night whilst watching Top Gear, the girlfriend asked me if there was anything i'd like for Christmas and I said i quite fancy getting a rescue club. To this she said that she would get me one if i told her which one to get and as long as it is within budget (£80-100). I have Titleist 3 and 5 woods which are 15 and 19 degrees, so im asking if anyone knows what degree would best suit and which is best to buy? I've not really given rescues too much thought before but since i tend to struggle with my 3 iron, i thought a rescue might replace it?

Any thoughts would be great?!

Beaker I tried quite a few: titleist, ping etc.. the one that I hit best was the ben ross, which I picked up for 40 sheets, but just depends on what suits you really. I would recommend one.

I wouldn't like to recommend which club to buy, I think you need to try some out to see what suits you for feel and distance.

I brought my first rescue clubs this year for the same reason..I was strugling with my long irons. I made the mistake though of buying a 5 wood and a number 3 TM rescue. The problem being was the 5 woods loft was 18 degree and the #3 rescue's loft was 19 degree and even though the rescue's shaft is about 1 1/2 inches shorter, I used to hit them very much the same distance (within 10 yards) so don't fall into that trap.

Anyway I have 2 rescue's now and wouldn't be without them, very easy to hit and I know longer use long irons.

Your a six handicapper, you should know what you need to replace.

All depends on what your after from the hybrid. I have a 19 degree with a stiff V2 which drills the ball low. I find that most hybrids pop the ball too high. This club keeps the ball down which I like and its about a 2 iron distance for me.

I have dropped the 3 iron and can grip down the shaft slightly or go easy with it.

I tried loads and loads of hybrids before I settled on this baby of mine, I'd advise that you head down to your local range and take a good few out with you. So many people of here recommend the Cobra Baffler that I stupidly bought it off of ebay without trying it. It went higher than my 9 iron! Needless to say it went back on ebay very very quickly.

Just asking what other forumers would recommend!?! Never given them thought before and thought if other people had them then they may have some advise? Any advise is good advise!!

Anyway, the problem I have is for some reason my 3 iron goes as high as a 6 or 7?! 4 iron i can hit 185 consistently so looking for something that goes around 200 as my 5 wood goes 215 so a gap of 30 yards is quite big?! Plus i find it easier to control my ball flight and shape with my fairway woods rather than long irons so thought a rescue could be the solution?

The problem you may find is that the rescue will generally go higher than the iron, hence if it's windy I ditch i for a 1 iron. If you go for a 19 degree with a draw weighting then that may reduce the height you generate.

Listen to this for strangeness, I have been struggling with hybrids for some time so I took my ben sayers m8 tours, some crappy Longridge hybrid to the range, I struggled with the M8s yet again but creamed the £20 Longridge on 8/10 shots!! just hope the DWS does the same.

Beaker, try as many as you can buy what feels best not by brand.

Depending upon the manufacturer & how thay base their calculations, anything between 18 degrees & 23 degrees can be constituted as a 3 iron equivelent.

Best way to decide for yourself is to know your 4 iron distance, then add the yards above that you need, then find the hybrid that best fits this calculation.

Though not quite as simple as it sounds.. he ho.

Parmo, I'm a big fan of Ben Ross equipment and it's very good value imo.

Whatever works, works, regardless of value or brand.

I love my Trimass's and wouldnt swap them at the moment, I just couldnt get over this Longridge and the flight it gave up to 190, my step son wants a tenner for it!! hand.bitten.off.

Funny enough I went to a TM demo day yesterday with the intention of getting a burner 3 hybrid. Having hit my current one (Cobraw Baffler DWS) and my tour burner 4 iron I was only hitting the 3 hybrid the same distance as my 4 iron. I tried a 2hybrid and hit it nearly 190 with range balls into a left to right wind but that is the same as I hit my 5 wood. The outcome. No change required.

The point of my rambling is that TM have very flexible shafts in their hybrids (even the stiff) and so if you try those being a good player you may find you hit them too high or the shaft isn't ideal for you. I guess the old adage of try before you buy applies. Go to a big retailer and try as many as you can on a launch monitor and ideally on a range so you can actually see how the ball flies.

I too am a little perplexed, if you are indeed a 6 h/c player or better, why are you asking the question?

I couldnt recomend a club for someone like you but all I will say is that if you are looking for a hybrid to add to your kit, 18 or 19 degree is what you want in a club that you feel is right for you. But by now you should be competent enough to know with your skills and senses what club is good for you.

Herb - All I am doing is asking for advice?! Surely theres nothing wrong in that? Isn't it part of the point of the forum? I've asked for advice before on a number of things and used it and its nice to hear peoples views, thats all?

Anyway, thanks for your tips everyone. I popped into my local driving range on the way home from work and they have a TM demo day next week so i'll give some of them a try and see how it goes! Then inform the girlfriend which one i like (Just hope its within the budget?!?)

Yes you are right and I didnt mean to upset you, it was just a surprise to me regarding the subject and you being off 6, sorry if the wording offended.

I would just go and hit some hybrids untill you find one that flys to the distance needed regardless of the number on it,

Couldn't agree more. Failing that I've got a MD with a grafalloy blue that I can't hit but all the good players at mine (that have tried it) hit great every time!!!

Not a problem, just like asking for other peoples advice.

I'll see how this demo day goes and go from there!
