Which Ball & Why?

There was a article last year about how only fast swing players which usually is Cat 1 maybe 2 really benefit from a three piece ball. This article was sent out for Pro's to send to customers, most mid to high and even slower Cat 2 would be best with 2 piece rather than 3,4 and 5 piece balls.

Though I am playing a two piece now, I do like the Z-Star as I have a fast swing speed and love the feel. I don't get anymore side spin with the Pro V1 or Z-Star than a AD333, in fact I prob get more from the AD333.

One thing though for sure, I can not stand Callaway balls.

I liked the AD333 in the winter when the greens were so receptive and it was better for putting on the slower surfaces. Now they've dried out (they were actually pretty quick on Wednesday) I prefer the Z Star or the TM TP black/red. Got some old Cally tour Ix to lose first though (shouldn't take long the way I hit on the range tonight)

Having just gotten my first handicap 26 (just call me a Bandit), I decided that i must get some consistency into my play. Using the same ball is an obvious part of this.

I have got past the point where I am losing balls regularly so can now look to using a regular ball

having used a mish mash of warbirds, and other ebay lake balls I have been using Srixon AD333 balls for the last couple of rounds.

have they made an immediate impact?... NO
But as I get more experience and get to know what I can do with the ball, it can only help

Phil, this was the main reason behind the original post, wanted to see if consistency was a consideration for most players. And if the higher handicappers were playing Pro V's, not quite as a 'fashion victim', but because it is a popular ball (on tour, in the ads etc..). Its a high spinning ball and many higher handicapper's are hitting with degrees of sidespin, so thattype of ball isnt helping.

The NXT Tour is an excellent mid range ball, i much prefer it to the AD333. Come the summer months i'll go back the the Pro V1x for added touch imside 100 yards and greenside.

Most players who use the Molitors/TopFlites/DDH's of this world would benefit from using a ball like the AD333. They'll still get the distance, it'll feel better around the green - improving confidence, and they won't cost much more.
I use a premium ball as I like the levels of spin and consistency of feel around the greens and when putting. Off the tee I couldn't care less what I'm using (par 3 excepted) but after that the short game kicks in and I want spin and feel. Last round I was able to get up and down several times from around the green because I could get enough spin on my Cally i(s) to stop near the hole. If I'd tried the same shot with an AD333 it would have rolled 15 feet past.
I don't lose many and this is a deciding factor as well. Play the best ball you can afford to lose. The short game will benefit.

So at what point would a hacker like me benefit from changing from an AD333 to a Pro V

Are we talking approx 15 handicap or what??

Fragger (This is my 350th post, do I get a cheer) :D

No cheer till you get to a thousand.

I would say that if you are playing to 15 or better then you would probably benefit from using a premium ball. Around the greens is where you make your score. If your chips are not stopping where you want them to then using a better ball will help. But some people naturally generate a lot of spin so a decent 2-peice ball like the NXT Tour is more than enough.
You need to try some different balls to make a decision

I (still) have a couple of boxes of premium balls (they were free) and I'm still waiting for the game to catch up (might even be time to contemplate a deal on these).
I've been using DX2's and AD333, but they feel quite a bit different now. (tried PX3's - great for slicing, little else)

Don't like NXT's (they feel hard to me) and as for Callies . . .

Sorry to be late to the party on this one but I only just came accross the forum while looking for topics about golf balls.

Have been using the ProV1 but have just this morning given the B330-S a 9 hole test drive before work(I was on the Tee at 6:15). I have no problem with the V1 but the B330s is £5 cheaper a dozen and has some good write ups. It's a great ball. Played it alongside a V1 for comparison. Distance off the driver was the same, I hit more fairways with the B330s though. Mid iron spin was immense, I definately get more spin with the B330s than I do with the V1 which might be useful in the summer. Couldn't tell much difference between the 2 when chipping and it felt a bit harder off the putter but I quite liked that.

Definately too early to tell if I'll change permenently but for me it's definately on a par with the ProV1.

During the winter, when it's wet rather than frozon. I reckon what ball you use doesn't matter much. Ten days ago on 170 yard pard 3, a Srixon Distance ball that I was using stopped inside 1.5 metres of where it landed on the green. That was a 6 iron from the tee.

So this winter I've just been using any old ball that's been lying around. As for the summer (if it ever arrives!), I'll probably go back to the mid range Trispeed, or more probably the E5+ or E6+ from Bridgestone. I can't justify using a ProV or ZStar.

I'm still playing with AD333s and Callaway Diablo balls.
Won't be swapping to my normal mid-range ball for some time to come.
