I met up with two friends over the weekend, one was talking about getting fitted for a driver, the other for a new set of irons. Neither have blank cheques but they are able to spend a reasonable amount. In each discussion, I met them separately, we were unsure as to how to go about this. Our home pro shop has a limited number of options so whilst the service may be good the variations to try will be limited. A chain golf shop has a very wide spread of options but may have time pressure for other people to be in the test area.

For those who have been fitted what advice would you give? Should you go in with an idea of make of club and just look to get the best fit for that club or should you look for someone who can offer the widest range of brands?

From my fitting, my advice would be to go to a chain and try out a number at a chain and then go to a specific fitting once you have narrowed it down- i.e. Ping, Titleist etc. and get fitted properly by them. My fitting with a chain was poor, they didn't have the full range of shafts and grips to try.

My experience with CF has all been at the Belfry.
It used to be that you could try clubs from a range of about 7 manufacturers, the fitter would make suggestions (based on their knowledge/experience) to find the basic club type you should be using then you'd try different heads and shafts in various combinations until the best one was discovered.

Now they make you decide on brand before I believe.

Personally I prefer the various brands approach so you get the best club for you, rather than the best club a certain brand has available for you.

Is there a large golf resort, such as the Belfry, in your area which has the facilities for CF on different brands?
Could be worth looking into.

Close House is a big new place that may do the job so that is worth suggesting to them. That is probably the biggest in our region.

I wouldn't say that...... But it's got a few different brands to choose from, though not too sure how competitively priced their clubs are...??

You could also try......

American golf , Gosforth, huge choice of brands
Philipps golf, Camperdown ind est, huge range too
Andy Paisley, hexham golf club
Dynamic indoor golf, Brunswick ind est
Hobson's golf club, Burnopfield
ZFL Golf, Benton ind est

There's a local fitter that's a member on here too MGL

Plenty choice

Why not send a private message to MGL? I believe he is a club fitter and he is based up in your part of the world. Well.....Sunderland......if you can bring yourself to talk to the enemy ;)

I meant in terms of a Belfry style club. I know there are other golf outlets that offer greater choice and other pro's that can offer fitting. Close House have piled a lot of money into their set up and so that is why I mentioned them. The names you gave are good ones for me to forward. Thanks.
