When I were a lad

My first pint was 87p. Ben Truman’s bitter. Used to be able to get hammered for a fiver when I first started drinking.

And I remember getting a pound dinner money at school - bought me 20 Dorchester’s and a quarter of midget gems. My diet was awful in those days.

Pathetic Shark may be able to clarify, but we had a subsidised bar onsite where we worked. I can't remember what Fosters was in 1983-84 with subsidy and then Kronenburg 1664 came along and the half gallon club was formed. That created some fun. I can also remember going behind the bar to help out for a leaving do and that got messy too

My father told me (ahem) about a comedy sketch which must have been mid/late '60's early 70's where they were moaning about lack of decent beer (I thought he thought), and the repeated punch line was something like "Double Diamond, Worthington E and bloody Watney's Red Barrel". But I can't remember who (he said) did it. Anyone remember it?

It may have been Monty Python as they did include Watney's Red Barrel in 2 or 3 of their sketches, but if it was, I can't find reference to it.

Recent references to beer at one and six/ two bob a pint prompted the question. Thank goodness for proper beer at my local Young's pub where we would sink a couple of pints of Ramrod and Special (a connoisseur's light and bitter to the uninitiated).

Monty Python Travel Agent/Holiday sketch refers to “Bloody Watneys Red Barrel “ throughout, no mention of the other two though. (Just watched it as I had a vague memory all 3 were mentioned but only WRB was)

When I was a student at QMC in the mid 70s, Adnams was 22p a pint (37p for Old Peculiar). I thought it was the cheapest beer in London. Then I got a summer temp job at the Shell Center, where beer was 21p (and the food in their excellent canteen was free).

I was aware of the Travel Agent and Mr Smokestoomuch sketches but whatever is is that I remember was definitely like a list of beers available and those 3 were mentioned.

I remember my old grandad giving me a sixpence to go and buy a Mars bar.

My first job at aged 13 was all day Saturday cleaning the local butchers shop, got £3 for the day. Also did a milk round at the same time, meeting the milky about 05:30 and working until mid morning for 50p a round.

My first job leaving school was £30 a week, and had to give my mum a tenner for room and board.

Remember both my parents worked for Xerox, they had a social club that sold stupidly cheap beer, as did Rediffusion, where I worked.

My morning paper round paid eight shillings, of which I gave four to mum as contribution for my keep.
At 16 first full time job paid £8, of which £4 went for my keep.. Found myself in the office on my own, the phone rang, and I was OMG.
Wasn't sure what would happen. I had never answered a phone in my life before...

Use to wash cars for 50p a go as a cub in bob a job week
I used to hate bob a job week. If i remember correctly it used to be during school half term. Instead of playing football with your mates you had to wash some geezers car or cut his grass to raise a few pounds for the scout group. It should have been called slave labour week.
