I just cant get my head round competitive golf for some reason.

I play bounce games and so far this year have shot 84, 97, 89, 82, 93, 87 mostly in the 80's and a few in the low 90's.

I get in a comp, shot 106 in first comp, then scored only 20points in stableford comp.

I know these scores do not reflect my ability. Are the committee in a position to accept supplementary scorecards on bounce games as long as all rules are adhered to in order to get a true reflection of my ability?

On a good note, I've added 20 yards to each club through learning to keep some lag in the club on my downswing.

Advice welcome.

You can submit up to 10 supplementary cards in a year (no more than 1 per week) BUT have to sign up beforehand that you are going to submit the card and have it signed by a member (usually). For me that feels exactly the same "pressure" as a qualifying competition as it's not about winning but reducing my handicap...

Your handicap should reflect your performance in competition golf NOT bounce games.

Sounds good, at least it gives me the chance to put pressure on myself away from a comp, and still play in comps to further reduce.

The plan for tomorrow is to put in supplementary card watch this space for .1

Go for it. I know some think it's an easy option but I tend to disagree - certainly the mental aspect. Depends on your course Par v SSS but can mean your score is judged more "harshly" than many comps if your CSS is invariably more than the SSS.

I take it your a vanity handicapper then? Why would you want a lower handicap than you can play to in a comp? Surely it will just lead to further frustration at 0.1 back? Clearly the competitions are highlighting a weakness in your game that needs rectifying.

No vanity at all, that a new tag for people.

I just know that I can play at a better level and having not played in comps for a while and the last 2 playing awful want to play in comps witha truer reflecting handicap. It would be the other way if I was play way under my handicap and being tagged a bandit, at least submitting supplementary cards means that I'm doing all I can to be of a true handicap in comps. There are too many people who are happy to float round 24 and 25 that ruin a card if they know they cant win a prize but if they are in with a shot play well throughout the round.

I see you would also like to lower your handicap considerably, are you vain about it, or just have aspirations ;)

I would steer clear of supplementary's. What happens if you get a big cut. It just makes a tough job even harder playing in comps. Learn to deal with the pressure and let the cuts come in a competitive environment

I play at 10 & 11 over on bounce games but similar to you mentally I'm not equipped to do it in competitions. Therefore my handicap is correct for competition play, I finished 5th at the weekend at +18 with a quadruple on the last........which was just pressure. I have no doubts I will win a comp by a considerable margin but when that happens it will be because I deserve not because I'm a bandit.

I know the feeling lyden. I recently had my 10th 0.1 and had 3 buffers in between. I have now decided after the upcoming medal on Sunday and apart from the club champs (only entering as may have a sniff at nett by the time it comes round) I am playing bounce games with my 2 mates and thats it. Putting too much pressure on myself and to be honest I am just not enjoying playing comps every weekend.

Maybe take a break from comps for a little while and just play bounce games. Take the pressure off then when you do decide to play a comp & just play it as if the score doesnt matter i.e for fun.

good luck

I've had the same problem as you recently, pressurizing myself too much in comps resulting in high scores. But in the last comp and managed to control myself by staying calm, playing one hole at a time and not getting too far ahead of myself, so that's what I'd recommend you do too, good luck fella.

What time did you tee off Sunday? Weather really started coming in for the late starters.

I'm hoping for a bit of a cut. Heard the B word a few times (all in jest I'm sure) after coming in with 42 pts. I think it was parring 1 and 9 to have two 4 for 4s that did it.....

I used to suffer a similar problem until late last year when I decided to play for fun EVEN in comps. Two of us go out, have a laugh (normally at each other), finish the round and have a few beers.
The biggest difference I have noticed with myself is when I'm in trouble in a bounce game I'll knock it out, pitch on and a couple of putts going away happy with a bogey. I now do this in comps instead of going in the trees, looking for the impossible shot to the green, hitting the trees some more, getting more desperate to get to the green, trying a miracle shot through a gap that's not there and eventually walking off with a 9 or 10 wondering how that happened. Now I pick the easiest route out of trouble and get it on the green from there.

Always recover from a bad shot with a good shot instead of trying to recover from a bad shot with an impossible shot.

Enjoy it... it's fantastic pressure... it really is top end golf (your own personal 'Masters') if you think about it. One day that feeling will wear off and you'll just rock up to comps practically expecting to shoot under your h/cap, it'll be more annoying than enjoyable then.

I'd just sit back and enjoy the rush! .... and love those nerves!

Stick at the comps and dont sweat it.
Was om 3 in NZ but now on 6 here after my 3 cards.
I'm a bit like you at the moment in that in the 4BBB roll up games we play Weds and Friday easily play to handicap, so loving having the shots back. But then in the 3 comps have been 9th, 15 th and 48th ish, with 4 , 4 and 5 over handicap.
In the last one on Sunday it was two shots that cost me four shots. Into bunker face with 3 wood on par 3 and had to come out sidewards ( should have hit driver ) and then under estimated strength of wind and was OB by an inch.
Not worrying about it too much as pleased with 6 pars in row going out and 5 on the way back

Yep its a strange thing but we all seem to do it.

Exactly the same for me - hitting low teen handicap scores in all the bounce games running up the season start and 3 x 0.1 back since then - doh!! Gone from 18.3 (18) to 18.6. (19) when I was hoping to be on 17 now!

Saturday was a classic - 4 under handicap by the end of the 7th (gross 4 over par) then hit a 10 on a par 5 to give everything back so ended up level H/C on the front 9. Then went to pieces think about 'what could have been' and trying desperately to get it back & got another 0.1.

So - my mindset is now to have fun as I have another 9 x 0.1's before I get to 20 H/C so have a bit of breathing space.

Fingers crossed for the weekend.

Tee'd off 11.30. the wind was blowing a little by then, and by the 10th was howling. had a shower on 8th and 9th, poured down as we came down 14th and never stopped. Just glad it was over.

Have to have a knock some time. Played today never went down the SC route and shot 38 points.

BTW Ian good shooting on Sunday, no spaces this weekend so in next weekend earlier, just going to enjoy it and make sure I'm not half cut when I turn up lol
