There are lots of players on the forum that are just above single figures myself included 10.5.I also know that im so close to single figures as my scores tell me that im very capable, what do you think it will take to get you to single figures, and for the single figure players any advice on what did it for you to get to single figures and stay there.

3 things...

1) Practice your short game and putting
2) Practice your short game and putting
3) Practice your short game and putting

I am hoping to get into single figs this year, but wife and kids will have a big say on my time, so the time I get will need to be constructive.

Will be trying to get to the range 2/3 times a week, after kids in bed! most of it will be 100 yards and in.
Going to spend 10/15 mins on the putting green after each trip to the range.
Hoping to get 2 competative rounds in each week.
Carpet putting at home also, when the wife has junk on tv!

Single figures isn't rocket science. Hit 5 greens in regulation and you should be about there. The rest is how your short game is.

If you then work on your longer game, hit more than 9 greens in regulation then you are pushing mid-to-low single figures.

If you hit more than 14 greens in regulation then you are pushing scratch.

*simples*

Start of last season I was shooting around 95 (par 72). By end of summer I was shooting 83-86 consistently with a few 80's and 81's in there.
All of this was down to spending roughly 20% long game 80% short game. Short game is massive!! It has to be good to get lower scores. Not blowing my trumpet here but if I hit my approach to edge of the green I rarely have to use the putter. I get to within a foot of the pin and it's a gimme. (obviously have to put it in a comp).

Get your short game sorted and your scores will come down very quickly. It is worth pointing out I did play 3 times a week as well as about 5 hours practise a week on the ratio I said earlier.

Hopefully I will break into single figures consistently this year!

Good luck with your quest for single figures. :)

I have to concur. It's my short game thats killing me and once I get up and running (as opposed to shuffling as I am at the moment) then its 120 yards and in that I'm focussing on. I'm not going to worry overly about the swing unless it starts to fall apart big time as it works of a fashion. Putting, chipping and particularly bunkers are the order of the day practice wise for me. I can get out of bunkers pretty well but I need to learn more about flight and distance control

I do understand the short game is crucial and i have been practicing like mad unlike losttheplot im not stone dead from the edge of the green on a regular basis, perhaps thats where my two shots lie.I tend to use an 8 iron or my 60 degree lob if i have a fluffy lie, what club do you use from the edge?

1. Don't get in big trouble off the tee even if you have to sacrifice some distance.
2. If you do get in trouble - take your medicine and make a "good" bogey.
3. Practice your chipping until you can get up and down from 30/40 yards quite often and from just off the green more than 50% of the time.
4. Practice your putting until you hardly ever 3 putt from inside 30 feet.

Another vote here for the short game, especially putting.
Just imagine Jimmy has a 10 footer for birdie and Boab has 9 feet for par.
Jimmy misses and settles for par and Boab holes his for par.
Guess who gets to the next tee first with a spring in his step and crunches one down the middle. :)

Well put. Never thought of it like that before.

whether your on the fringe or 10yards off to the side of the green you have to have the short game to get yourself close. It depends on the lie and distance and what you want to do with the ball that dictates the club choice. It's personal preference aswell. Some like to bump and run, others prefer a high flop etc etc etc.
You will find that 20% long game practise comes good becuase you become more accurate and do make the greens in regulation and if not you are close to the fringe instead of missing the green by miles. That's how I found it coming from shooting 95.
I echo the comment on sacrificing distance to take accuracy. I'd prefer to drive 200 yards and be on the fairway than 250yards behind a tree or in the rough. Quality not quantity so my missus says.... :D

Hi,
Hit more greens so distance control with your irons is how i got down to single figures my short game still isnt great but hitting a lot of greens so can get away with it.

Keeping it on the short stuff is usually a help, and a solid short game wont go amiss, also better course management, knowing when to bite the bullet and take your punishment helps.
