Hello,

My line is as follows, I have only been playing a year and have a handicap of 14.

Wilson Polar Bag (Orange)
Dunlop cube driver 10.5
Cheap 5 wood (Ice - from local pro shop - cheap)
Wilson OD Plus 3&7 fairway woods - 2nd hand
Titliest DCI irons - 4,5,6,7,8,9,pw,sw - 2nd hand.
Dunlop 65I Lob Wedge - 64 degrees
Spalding Putter - old but feels very comfortable - 2nd hand.

I did initially start with a starter set from ebay. Which i have now passed onto my brother in law, who has got the bug.

I would like any advice re my set and any ideas on a new set to help me develop my game

Regards BIDZ81  :D :

Driver: Taylor Made R7 Quad HT 9.5deg
Hybrid: Taylor Made Rescue 16deg (2 iron)
Irons: Callaway Big Bertha custom fit irons 3-10 + W & SW
+ Titleist Vokey 60deg Wedge
Putter: Odyssey Marxman Mallet

Ball: Titleist ProV1 or Taylor Made (Black)

Favourite club at the moment is my Hybrid - it is so reliable off the tee and I can normally get 220-240 yards with it. I love the Big Bertha iron's and have had them for 4 years now.

Bag: Callaway Euro Stand Bag

Driver: Titleist 905R 10.5
Hybrids: Cleveland Halo 2i and 4i
Irons : Cleveland CG4 3-PW
Wedges : Cleveland 588 RTG+ 56 and 60, Cleveland 588 chrome 64 (rarely in bag.)
Putter: Yes! Tracy II

Ball: Pinnacle Exception (Don't laugh!)

Shoes: Puma GTX Gortex (White/Orange) Adidas (3/4 year old, Black)

It's a completely new set assembled at various stages within the last 4/5 months. Have only played 3 rounds with the driver and beginning to get used to it and used the hybrids for the first time on course this afternoon. They have a lovely feel when striking the ball and I think they could well become the favourite in my bag.

Cleveland clubs seem to suit me and my game, so I'll be more than happy to spend the next few years with these clubs in my bag.

Driver: Cobra F Speed 10.5
Rescue: Mizuno FLI-HI CLK 17 degree (5 wood)
Irons: 3 Iron Taylor Made HT, 4-PW Taylor Made OS2
Wedges: Cleveland 588 RTG 56 & CG11 60
Putter: Taylor Made Imola 8

I have the 3 Iron HT due to the distance I can hit it. I seem to be able to connect really well and often out hit my rescue club by a good 20 yards, which is strange!

In the last 6 months I have had the TM R7, Ping G5 and the Cobra. The Cobra is a keeper for me, instills confidence and goes like the wind!

However, all drivers are different and what's good for me, may not be for you. Get down to the local shop and hit a fair few balls with it, see how you get on. Don't make an impulse decision though, leave it and go back a couple of days later, hit the same club and that will let you know if it's the right club. I bought the G5 on a whim, hitting it well at the club shop but I think I was just having a good day and on the course was a different matter.

Agree with your suggestion of going back a couple of times before buying. I made an expensive mistake with a Burner based on a few very flattering shots on the range with it. It was only later that I realised that I could not control the thing.

Hi Jezz,

My question is have you come across anybody else who carries my wood "makeup"?? I carry driver, and then strong 4 and strong 7. This I reckon gives me a 3.5 wood and a 6 wood.

I think this combination should be considered for its versatility.

Driver Titleist 905R with UST Proforce
Strong 4 Wood and Strong 7 wood, Cally Big Bertha 2004 with Adila NV65
Callaway X-Forged 3 to PW
Callaway X Tour wedges 52 and 58 (lots of lead tape)
Scotty Cameron Newport Centre shafted Prototype

All in a lovely 2007 Cally Staff bag.

Hi all, first post so be gentle!

In the bag I have

Adams Bul Insight Driver, 10.5, regular
Adams Ovation 3 wood, regular
Adams A2 Irons (5-PW), Stiff
Adams A2 Utility - 3&4 iron, Stiff
Cleveland CG11 Wedges, 52,56,60, Regular
Carbite RH Putter

Works for me, although seem to be hankering after changing the driver.

Wedges are superb, as is the putter even if it was cheap as chips. Hybrids are awesome and so easy to use.

Oh and balls either Srixon AD333 or Callaway HX Hot

Most of my stuff is pretty new as needed to upgrade and get things fitted properly to improve my game

Ping G5 9.5 degree Driver with X-Stiff shaft
Taylor Made V-Steel 3 Wood Stiff Shaft
Mizuno MP-32 irons (3-PW) Stiff shaft
Titleist Vokey 56 degree Sand wedge
Cleveland CG12 60 degree Lob wedge
Odyssey Black Series (Number 2, i think) Putter

Use a Pro V1 (new one) all the time, but try and use ones I have hit a lot in practice and only put a new one in play in competitions

The driver is really good, and gave me an extra 20 yards straight away because of the shaft, and th 3-wood is so shallow that the ball rises and drops like an iron shot, so useful for those par-5s

The irons are simply brilliant, got them custom fitted by MIzuno so they sit perfectly and when you strike them you just feel like you havent hit it

Wedges are really nice and the CG12 gets so much rip on the greens, and the putter has a really nice look so i feel comfortable over it which is the important thing really.

BalataCarter,
Like your line-up and thinking - making sure you get sensible distance gaps at the long end of the set has become quite an interesting debate with the advent of utilities and the demise of 1 and 2-irons. Your solution seems a very wise one, especially for those who still prefer wood-length clubs to the shorter-shafted utilities.

All in all I'm amazed by the response to this post and the sheer volume of top-end clubs out and about in people's bags. One post (sorry can't remember who now I'm writing this) talked about using the Pinnacle Exception ball - no need to apologise for that - it's a great ball. It's soft, highly playable and of course half the price of all those premium models.

Finally... since posting my bag line-up, one thing has changed following a press trip last week to see Ping's new autumn launches including a full line-up of G10 clubs. The 3-wood impressed me so much I put it straight in the bag for probably the most important competition of my life on Saturday as I've always felt the G5 was just a touch big for confidence off the deck. Read more about the G10 fairway wood in the club test in Golf Monthly's November issue; and see the new G10 driver in action on this week's Gear Vault video blog:-

I'm your Pinnacle Exception man, JezzE. I first came across them when I got a sleeve given to me when purchasing a bag in my pro shop. All my mates laughed when I put it on the tee (Pro V players, all higher handicap than myself) but they weren't laughing when they seen the effect it had on my game. Longer drives and more stopping ability on the green = ball staying in my bag. One of the mates has even started playing it and he finds it far better for his game than the ProV's.
