GM's equipment editor here!

After a year of surprising permanency in terms of the line-up in my bag I thought I'd share with you some of the reasons why a relative status quo has been achieved in 2007. Click on this link for more details: http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/blogs/offi...cle_134397.html

I'd also like to hear from you about your clubs and why you like (or perhaps dislike?) them. Please add a thread to this post to share your info with other like-minded equipment afficionados, or email me at jezz_ellwood@ipcmedia.com

I have had the same driver for 3 seasons (Mizuno MX500) and my Cobra 2300 irons for 3 seasons. I also carry the Hogan 3 &4 rescue clubs as the irons are 5-pw. The only new addition to the bag is a new Oddyssey XG number 7 putter which gives me a bit of confidence from long range. I will always have my Cleveland 56, 58 and 60 wedges to get me on the short stuff, but that said, I have had 4 golf bags in 2 seasons and 2 leccy trolleys.

madandra - thanks for your post

One thing intrigues me - your three wedges are all quite close together in terms of loft - what's your thinking there?

This is my first year of putting together a bag having passed on my beginners set. I too have changed the actual bag a few times and settled on an Ogio Grom.
The driver has perhaps taken the longest to find am and fairly set of my Taylormade R7 460. My Cleveland Hi-Bore 3 wood and 2i and 3i Halos are perhaps my favourite clubs though. My irons are Wilson Staff DI7s though I have had to ditch the 4 iron in favour of a gap wedge as the gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge is fairly huge. I have added to that a Nike Tour SV lob wedge. I have tried numerous putters as well and have settled on a Ping G5 UG-LE which just seems right for me. This will, hopefully, be my bag for a few years or until something newer and shinier comes along.

That must be some rough at your course, madandra.

My bag's now quite settled after playing around with it for the last 2 years.

Ogio Grom stand bag

Titleist 907 D1 10.5 reg. driver
Taylormade Mid 19 degree recovery
Mizuno MP Fli-HI irons 2-4
Mizuno MP30 irons 5-wedge
Titelist Vokey wedges, 54 and 60 degrees
Odyssey White hot 2 ball blade putter

Taking my 3 wood out of the bag and replacing it with the 2 iron is the best thing I've ever done. And replacing the 56 degree wedge with the 54 degree narrows the gap between the wedge and lob wedge which has helped.

John, how are you getting on with your titleist 907 D1 ? I'm thinking of changing my Ping G5 and the titleist 907 is a contender for my bag .

I use 980F 3 & 5 wood and love them to bits.

So my line up is:
G5 10.5 degree with graffaloy pro launch shaft.
Titleist 980 3 & 5 woods
Mizuno MP60 Irons
Vokey 56.08 and 60.04 wedges
Ping Anser putter (about 15 years old!)

Hi Junior,

Well, I've been using the new 907 D1 since May now (about 25 rounds) and am confident that it's a big improvement on my old non-conforming Taylormade r580 xd. I previously made a post called "The truth about custom fitting - and the male ego !" which you may want to read.

I've been keeping a track of my rounds since I bought the club using a program called Scoresaver 2 and am hitting 55% of fairways - which is about right for my handicap (now 9)

I am definitely getting more distance now and in spite of what Titleist say the club does in fact allow you to work the ball left to right or vice versa when required. Definitely GO FOR CUSTOM FITTING though..

The club looks very comfortable on the eye when addressing the ball. I'm convinced it helps with alignment thanks to the unusual shape. The only down side would be the sound ( a bit tinny ) but for the extra performance I could cope with a driver that sung Rangers songs into my ear every time I hit it!

Hope this is of help.

John

Swingstar,

Your wood line-up is interesting. TM 200s are quite old now so I guess you've struggled to find anything you hit better?

Funnily enough, when we do What's in the Bags with the Tour pros in the mag it's often the 3-wood that is likely to be the oldest club in the bag (with the exception of the odd freaky putter here and there).

I guess that with drivers, size has made a big difference in recent years, whereas it's only of limited advantage in fairway woods, and perhaps even a disadvantage as most golfers don't like something too big to look down on when they're trying to sweep it away majestically off the deck.

Have you tried other woods since these or not?

Thanks for the info John,

I've had a look at the titleist in the pro shop and I like the way it sits. I'm also looking at a couple of drivers (Ft-5 and the Hi-bore XL) and will definately be custom fitted.

Swingstar -you've done a Woosnam and have 15 clubs!! I expect you have to drop one from the bag as I do.

I have an age old dilemma I cant decide on. Do i carry 52,56 and 60 wedges or just a 53 and 58 in order to carry a 3 iron. At the momnet I have 53 and 58 as I like carrying a 3 iron. If they allowed 15 clubs I'd be content.

I have
TM R7 425 TP driver
MD superstrong 3 wood (highly recommended)
Cobra baffler 2r
3-w Ping Zing 2
53 and 58 Mizuno R
Pinfire patriot putter (no laughing, these are like Scottie's at a quarter of the price!)

thanks for the reply

re the TM 200 series woods - I always struggle with FW and despite trying many newer models (most recently the Sonartec) have always gravitated back to the trusty favourites

probably could do with new shafts in them though
