A great ball striker off of 8, struggles with their short game or A average ball striker with a mickleson type short game off of 8?

Personally myself id opt for the first, because i think that with lots of practice short game can come, whereas being a good ball striker does not just come from practice. I put myself into the first category, i haven't got an official handicap yet, but when my short game falls into place ( like yesterday) i shot an 82, not bad considering 6 weeks ago i considered myself a 22 handicapper, i think this shows the importance of the short game, but at the same time i think it can be fixed quicker than the long game, views?

I would prefer the 2nd, you say the first as the short game would come with practice, the same can be said about either. Practice will make the long or short better, but if it was a choice between the 2 and the other part of the game did not improve it would still be the short game.

Short game is about touch, longer game is about crunching it. In my view, some one with no feel for the short game will never be as good as someone who has it. Lee Westwood will never have a good short game. Plenty of golfers can crunch their irons. I'll take the short game thanks.

On my day im pretty close to the first option (im 7 not 8), can be great some days as you hit so many greens the short game doesnt matter, other days it can crucify you and leave you soul destroyed. Take this afternoon, 9 holes, 6 straight pars, bogey 7, birdie 8 and eagle 9, -2 for 9 holes (hit 7 of 7 FIR and 7 of 9 GIR and 2 clumsy 3 putts in that (unlike me, didnt have the pace at all from distance, holed everything from 15-20ft lol). Given a choice I think Id like to have long game and short game of similar standards, whilst having one standout part can give you the odd great day it is ultimately more frustrating on most of the others

I have several friends at my club who would dispute this. They are shocking around the greens. One used to be called chippy chippy putt putt, and one can double hit at will. Last week he had a quadruple hit. Minimum.

I agree. My chipping is the pits and is doing my head in. I keep working at it and do the stuff I've been shown and take a small step forward and then two big ones back. I know it'll never be ideal and the mission is to purely find something that won't fat or thin it regularly and will at least give me a putt. I am a master of the double hit too

Being an 8 handicapper and having a good short game is ok, but i just don't hit the ball that well and always have poor GIR. Sometimes i only manage four GIR a round and it's really frustrating, so for me it would have to be being a better ball striker. But then again maybe the grass i always greener on the 'other side'. I am working on it though.
