What should I do?

Hi Guys,
I have taken various peoples advice on here and have decided to have a couple of lessons. One of the ladies I work with is married to a chap that used to be the professional at the Oxfordshire GC. He now does something completely different.

I asked if he fancied coming out on a course with me and give me some pointers but he said we should go to the range first and do that a few times, all sounds good so far.

We haven't discussed anything money wise and so (finally) the question I am wondering is which of the following to do:

Should I pay him the going rate of lessons?

Should I just pay for his balls at the driving range?

Should I pay for his balls at the driving range then give him a bit of beer money?

suggestions welcome.

DTM,
Sorry I meant to reply to your PM then promptly forgot about it the next time I logged on.

Not a member anywhere at the minute as I am planning on moving back down to surrey/hampshire in January. I alternate between playing at Blacknest down there and Hinksey Heights. I have played Waterstock before but never Witney Lakes. Just trying to get the scores down now. Hit 100 the other day so trying to do that consistantly then become a member so I can put a few cards in.

Did you say you were a member at the Lakes?

Phil

Phil,

if you can avoid paying the going rate for lessons, I'd snap the chance up! I would imagine just paying for the balls and a thank-you gift would suffice.

Did you hit 100 on the main course at Hinksey? Maybe see you around there sometime.

Cheers

Simon

If he is no longer a pro he may have reverted to armature status if that is the case it is against the rules to pay him anything.

But if he wants to give the guy something for an entirely unrelated reason, that's up to him!

That only applies for competition prizes methinks.

I could charge for lessons but I don't think I'd have an extensive client list!

That rule about not paying for someone because they are now amateur sounds like the same rule that if your mate gives you a tenner you SHOULD inform the taxman about your increased earnings.

Think I will pay for him to bash a few balls around then treat him to a bottle of his favourite tipple. I am hoping to have a few lessons with him then go out on the course and doing it that way makes it relatively painless for everyone.

Cheers

Actually the rules are quite specific in forbidding amateurs from receiving payment for golf instruction:

"Except as provided in the Rules, an amateur golfer must not receive payment or compensation, directly or indirectly, for giving instruction in playing golf."

The exceptions are pretty limited so for the most part, you officially can't pay an amateur for lessons. I'm sure you can think of ways round that though...
