What score makes the weekend bearable?

1shot less or 1 point more than my opponent(s). Simple as that.

I'll go along with this.
30 is the first target, or 80 if you want strokes.
Anything after that is obviously better.
40 points is virtually out of reach nowadays, not impossible but I need to shoot 72 gross(+2) - not something I do with any great regularity.
33-35 points is acceptable as it'll beat Fragger more often than not!!

You are also perpetuating the 36 points myth. 36 points is playing exactly to handicap providing that par and SSS/CSS are equal. For every stroke SSS/CSS differs from par the goalposts move i.e.:

SSS/CSS 2 more than par means 34 points is playing exactly to handicap.
SSS/CSS 2 less than par means 38 points is playing exactly to handicap.

So buffer zones move with the wind.

Except your handicap is an indicator of your stretch ability and not necessarily what you will do on a week by week basis when playing your 'normal' game. If you play your stretch ability game you may well get 36pts or more - but we don't do that - we play have our 'normal' game. As my normal' is not as good as my 'stretch' my 'normal' game will get me around 32pts stableford on average. @HawkeyeMS stableford points against how well played is for me a correct reflection on what we should expect.

So if I get 32pts I'm OK. To get 36pts I know I have to play well. Much above 36pts and Lady Luck has been on my side.

quite interesting out of #42 posts only 1 or 2 mention actual strokes while the majority take cover with points:rolleyes:

That's what the OP asked for

When I'm on the course, i don't even write points on my card in stableford comps, all I care about is my gross score, but gross score wasn't the subject of this thread.

gross of less than 100, which equates to 30+ points for me, then I'm happy. Still more important the company I keep though. Would rather score 17 with some great mates than 40 with a group of dullards.

Score wise I'm happy enough with anything sub-80, so 32 points and above.

My main satisfaction comes from how I actually hit the ball, so my long game prowess on the day is the most important factor in golf for me.
But I also feel good if my short game comes right on the day.
playing partners have a large effect on that side of my enjoyment, or how bearable the day is.

Heaven forbid anyone answers the OP in the context they started the thread in!!

To be honest theres only one proper way to play golf and that's medal.
However this time of the year due to wet courses, most clubs play stableford

Fair enough, saw the thread title then skimmed the rest. I just dont do stableford so in answer to the OP, no idea:lol:

To be fair, we have a great roll up group. Great characters and atmosphere and a range of handicaps from low single figure guys up to guys in the high 20's. It isn't feasible to play medal play every week and most wouldn't be interested in doing so. Also, the pace of play for prime time weekend isn't conducive to medal play as other groups behind all playing stableford would begin to concertina up behind more so than it already does.

Have read a few posts lately about 36 points being the norm.
I for one don't see this, purely because every course is different.
However my question is-what makes your weekend game bearable.
For me anything that starts with a 2 is diabolical.
A 3 and its bearable.
A 4 and its a great weekend.
On my course high 30s is the norm.

Above 36 regularly should indicate handicap is s tad high for your game.

If I shoot less than 90 I'm chuffed, over 95 and much less than happy. So less than 32 points looking for where it went wrong.

Must ask organiser of our Thursday roll-up if I can do a quick analysis of their records. This is a big stableford roll up and they keep meticulous records. Might be interesting to see what analysis shows.

I am disappointed if I don't shoot under my handicap as I don't feel it is reflective of my ability and want to get cut.
I'm ok with buffer, 0.1 back and I'm upset.
I recognise that this is not the norm and I will have to adjust expectations when things level out.
My comp performance has not been good enough this year, such a mental game, I regularly win roll ups and have been called a bandit more than a few times. Need to get it done when it counts now.

Anything under 80 and I'm happy (as I ever get).

Breaking 80 is not a target I set for myself as 79 is 7 over - and as I'm 10 not that easy to shoot, even although I do it pretty regularly in friendly golf. Clearly delighted if I can but don't get too hung up about it. These days I play without pre-set targets for the round and just see what I end up with.

Just being able to get and play, with 2 or 3 good holes makes the weekend bearable, for me.

Amen to the above.
Just playing makes my week/weekend more than bearable. If I've tried my best and given every shot my full attention, I'm happy, regardless of my score.

Slime.

Par the 18th, a very tough par 4, and it can put a nice gloss on even a terrible round, that might be enough to make it bearable actually.
