• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

What score are you capable of?

shot 82 once on a par 72. Closest I have come since is 84 and was playing like Seve! Don't know how I shot 82 as I feel I am a better player now.
I reckon if everything came together on the day I could go into the 70s. And when that day comes I will eat my clothes.

Keef,

Yes, I did that that elusive par round last year. A 67 around (I call it Royal) Craigentinny GC in Edinburgh last April. Short council course but great fun. I was on form at the time. Bit of a purple patch in my golfing life to be honest. Followed it up with a 74 around the Old Course at St Andrew's a couple of weeks later.

Can't hit a coo's behind with a banjo at the moment though. Struggling to break 80 anywhere. Ho hum.

At least you accomplished it fella!

This is a toughy, not sure if you are asking what I have achieved on some courses, or what I am capable of right now?

I will have a stab at both....

In the past I have had a small handful of sub par rounds around 68 to 71(just) not all at home courses, I have had god knows how many in the range between 71 and 76. I have had a small number of these in comps including sub par round of 71.

Today, its a lottery with my circumstances and my golf, if I turn up feeling fairly well health wise, and my best golf comes along with me too, I will be up for that kind of score again and may possibly achieve it, though the likelyhood is more in the region of my h/c. If I have a bad golf day, its real bad, bad health day and its poor, both and its not worth me turning up. On most days I can do my h/c give or take a shot or two.

If we're talking eclectic scores then I'm looking at a 46 (-26). Birdies on every hole and eagles on 8 of them.

As to actual scores, before my old course became 18 I went round the 9 holer twice in level par 68 while playing off 8. Once it was extended to 18 I've had a 2 under par 69.
Went round my potential new track in +6 last week and to be honest I feel quite capable of making par there.

Have levelled both nines numerous times at my track, but my best 18 is a 3 over par 75 off the back tees, in the rain.

If asked last year I would have said I could shoot level, but my entire game has gone to pot, and I can't hit a single club betwen the driver and the putter at the moment.
I hit them fine at the range, or on the practice ground, but melt on the course.

Luckily my short game and putting is hot, so I shot 10 over par round Crews Hill (nice course) today.

I have had a 66 and a few 68's on a par 68 course and and 72 on a par 72.

Like alot on here its putting both loops together which does not happen often i can go -2 on the front then +6 on the back but thats handicap golf

Just been back through SS2 and have shot 77 twice and 78 three times so I guess I matched my target way back when on the original post. Sadly they were all in roll up games and my best competitive score is 81 (off 15 - nett 66, 4 under) so I guess I need to focus on getting lower when it matters.

Earlier this year I shot 8 straight pars and finished with a birdie on the back 9 of my course off the whites - absolute purple patch. So I know I should have it in me to get round in 72. My best to date is 77.

What am I capable of ?

Single figures should be achievable.

All I need to do is learn how to hit a drive straight, and get some zing into it when I hit the damn wee spherical thing with any of my woods or irons. Learn to pitch and play bunker shots. Get my chipping up to scratch, and putt more consistantly.

And then all I've got to do is to get all that happening together in one round.

Don't rush me, I'll get there soon. ( Or maybe not )

It depends when you're asking...

Before a round I know I can score as low as anything. After a round it may be different.

Best so far is an 83 (at that time, a nett 58 !!) Not been close recently, but I know I can get it below that. Just a question of when.
