What is the toughest course you've played?

Craig, Craighead. On a damp November day with a bitter wind blowing in off the North Sea. Pure misery on fields of green.

The only thing I learned that day was how tough the trawler men must be.

Forgot about Ganton! I'd erased it from my memory banks. It took me 9 holes to get it. Once I started playing position golf rather than smash everything it at least only bruised me.

Probably Royal Birkdale just punishing from start to finish.

Carnoustie was brutal but I reckon it had a couple of holes that gave you a bit of respite and a chance to make a gentle par or birdie.

southerness we played on a day with 40mph winds and I don't think it's as punishing without the wind, I played Hunstanton with no wind once and it was defenceless.

And for those that say Lytham your wrong it's easy :D

Saunton East when it is blowing a bit can be a tad difficult.

That's a good shout, but it's an absolute pussy cat when compared to a windy day at the late Monte Mayor in Spain!

RIP.

Haven't played many courses down south but taking conditions out of it (otherwise Silloth and Hoylake would be top, followed by Murcar) then it's the only time you'll hear me agreeing with LQ and LB.

Birkdale was more than challenge from first to last, danger on every shot with no bail outs. Carnoustie 2nd from a pure course management perspective and LB shouts out Castle Stuart - that wasn't easy either...!

Wentworth West ignoring conditions

Silloth if we are including them, instant lost ball as soon as you went wider than the semi by mere feet last time I was there

In 2000 I was in Hawaii and played Ko'olau ...which had the highest slope index in USA. In the mountains, ravines, water and off the fairway on pretty much every hole is jungle. (I mean actual jungle, not rough) it was beautiful , but mad. And I had to play with rented clubs...

In the uk I got pretty beaten up by Brancaster on a windy day once. St Gearges in the rain was thought tough tough too

Given the conditions on the day it would be the Marquise at Woburn. It was in the forum meet, the day after a storm had passed through, and I scored 25 points and, on the day, that wasn't a bad score!

Played Muirfield the week after the Open 2002 and it was very difficult but the one that sticks out is Fortrose & Rosemarkie in a fairly breezy day, gorse was up and the fairways are fairly tight so pretty penal.

I can remember seeing a list of the courses with highest SSS in the Uk a while back.

I can't seem to find it now but I'm sure there were 6 courses all at +4.
The only 2 I can remember were Carnoustie and Southerness.

Yep, just checked.. Southerness par 69 SSS 73 Whites.
Carnoustie Par 70 SSS 74 Yellows only.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any higher than +4.
