What is the toughest course you've played?

It's a tough question to answer because many of us have only played a lot of courses once, and there is a big difference imo between thinking a course is tough because we played garbage or the weather was dreadful (and I've had plenty of the former and a few of the latter), and it actually being a very difficult course.

Trying to think about it without bringing the weather or the state of my game that day into it, my vote goes to the Nicklaus course at St. Mellion.
There just aren't very many good places to miss, either off the tee or around the greens.

I try to think of them without conditions hence why I never mentioned Southerness which probably had the toughest wind ive ever played in.

At Southerness I did try and enjoy the driveable Par 3's

Southerness was the hardest day I've ever had on a golf course, absolutely brutal. Going back in September so hopefully have better weather than we did to see how tough it is "normally"!

Probably Royal Lytham for me. Even if it's not too windy you need to play well to get a score, not much chance of scoring well relying on lucky breaks round there!

I would say Royal Dornoch as it tests every part of your game and ive never played it with a card in my hand in without a 3 or 4 club wind.

But... at the Moment Nairn is extremely tough, you miss the fairway by a foot and the ball is gone and most of the rough is so thick you can't even see your shoes let alone a ball . The last few times Ive played i have never seen so many groups looking for balls they prob never found. its had a knock on effect on the time to play a round, we were 4 and a half on Sat with no hold ups from the group in front... it was just looking for balls... mostly mine:(

Home Internationals are the week after next so once that is played they are going to cut most of it back.

That's why I never mentioned Silloth when we all met there, I think I took a driver to 1 par 3

The day at Hillside was a tad windy, but it was still the toughest for me anyway with no bail out areas with knee high wispy grass just a foot from the 2nd cut, so miss the fairway and reload, or walk many holes and be flag bitch for the day, as I was :(

Good question, but I guess a lot depends on the conditions on the day. By far the toughest I think I've played was up at Southerness. Not just the wind, but also the fact it was freezing cold.

Conditions aside, of the courses I've played, I'd say Carnoustie or West Lancs would be the hardest.

Yeah, definitley the conditions play a massive part. I've played Hillside once, nice day, little wind and shot -1 gross. Last time I played Royal Lytham I shot 108 with a good two hours of driving rain! Another good example, Southerness, 18 points half way when the weather turned, think I finished with 24. Brutal in the wind.

Royal County Down. Very tough in a strong wind. Although I think I probably played my best ever round of golf there as well.

Royal Ashdown ,heather and then even more heather and if that wasnt enough there was a lot of heather , did i mention the heather?
i cant remember so i will say it again ,heather ,and bloody lots of it.
i dont think i played it very well .:o

+1, lost 14 balls
'nother very tough one was Oceânico Victoria with ankle high rough just off the fairway

Les Bordes - having registered for 'The Golden Book'! Even/especially the 9 iron from 120 (inevitably, over water!).

Any of....
Royal Birkdale
Royal St Georges
Carnoustie

The pitch and putt at Littlehampton when I was about 7 or 8 - a right bugger; have never forgotten it :D !!

'Proper' golf has to be Royal Cinque Ports. Played it twice now in the winter and miss the fairway and you're stuffed. Actually found Royal St Georges the following day a bit more forgiving!
