What is a **@@ chipper!?

Have I witnessed Tiger play a chipper??

Of course I have!!

He just cannot carry a chipper as he has already got his full compliment of clubs so he uses the nearest to one .. no, not his seven iron but his chipper wood!!

A chipper with a suction cup on the end of the grip to get the ball out of the hole... The Rolls Royce of old giffer's golf clubs.

A rare clip of tiger using cutting edge old guy gear.

2) how come it's so popular if everybody hates it?

Who said it was? I've never seen one in action around my club/course, or in fact any course I've ever been to.

In fact, the only place they actually exist seems to be in Sports Direct.

.
.
or on the internet, which offers products for all perversions and foibles. :D

A chipper is........bad.

Water off a duck's back. If it works for you, ignore the posers who think they know everything about golf. I have used several (not all at the same time) for over 30 years and I've come to no harm. Why no similar condemnation of the lob wedge?

Anyway, what has it got to do with anyone but the player who chooses to use one?

So , ignore those that know all and listen to those that know they know nothing? ;)
:D
Chippers (God, I cant believe I even typed the word without wretching) were never adopted as proper clubs by any of the better players. Lob wedges are useful in more than one situation, ie bunkers, rough, bare lies over obstacles etc. That said, in the wrong hands, they may as well be cricket bats.

What is the qualification for "better players"?
Could it be "Handicap:7.7, non GPS assisted" or lower?
Or perhaps anything lower than "steady 17"?

Will there be a prize for getting the word "chipper" in the highest number of different posts?
I am sure I must be in the lead unless the mods turn nasty.

Its relative really isnt it, the better you get, the less reliant on gadgets you get and just get on with playing the game how it should be played.

No, you are winning this one!

Chippers are just WRONG!!! Like pineapple on a pizza. Have a meaty (or a cheesey if your veggi).
Also, isnt this the reason God invented wedges?

I think the chipper (yukky yuk yuk) has about the same loft as an eight iron, so why people just cannot use that is beyond me :D :D :D

In fairness, I actually "wafted" one today in sports direct whilst choosing a putter for the nipper.

I couldn't decide if I should "up n strike down" or just "flat" like a putting stroke. :o :D

Nope.
Did dabble briefly but it didn't really improve my chipping.
If it had I'd still be using it. I really don't care what folks think if something works for me.

As for it being a specialised club which is only good for one type of shot, doesn't that put it in the same category as a putter ? :D

I agree - if it works for you (and results in a reduction of your score) then use it (he says through gritted teeth). However, we are allowed 14 clubs and the amount of different shots we have to play (being more than 14) mean that we have to be resourceful. Theres no need to have a club soley for this use.

Its a bit like Micklesons two drivers at Augusta. One for a draw and one for a fade. Thats fine - but it uses up one more of his 14 clubs. Was it worth it? I guess so (I think he won that year although I may be corrected).

Chippers!!! Bloody Chippers!!!

IMO, Chippers have no place in golf. Well, if you want to be taken seriosuly I mean. I understand the point about hybrids etc but these have generally been accepted as fairway woods/metals.

Chippers however, have not. They are awful clubs. I have seen one in use, and it was worse than a wedge alternative.

I had a go too, and it was harder to use as you get stuck between strokes, putt or chip?

Use whatever is in the bag. PW, 7, 4 or 3 wood. Its far easier... and you don't look like a tool! :D

I had one although it has been consigned to the naughty cupboard. After joining my club and taking playing a little more seriously. I played rarely before and had no short game at all so bought myself a chipper, it was a deadly club and from 50 yds in I could always get it close much to the annoyance of my better player partners! I have no problems with the clubs I just decided to try and learn to hit the shots myself with the "proper" clubs in my bag. I have improved dramatically in this area and so don't use it, although I struggle with pitching!

And yeah use it like a putter, a longer swing for more distance etc and make sure you swing through!
