I haven't been playing for long but one thing I've understood is that using a chipper is just before driving metal splinters under babyseals nails in the scale of the bad things to do.

From the poll I notice that saying you hate chippers is also very fashionable.

So my questions are:

1) what is a chipper?
2) how come it's so popular if everybody hates it?

I hate chippers!

A chipper is what the club manufacturers' marketing teams came up with when they realised that they'd run out of ideas for extracting money from golfers (the original idea to produce a Driver shaped for putting was rejected on the grounds that not even golfers are that gullible)

when I was a kid in the 70's chippers were very popular, but not as popular as the bigger chopper.
Hope this clarifys things.

Its the bit inbetween putter and the wedge, much like the bit between your balls and your arse.

moving to OOB as this is going to get nasty! :D

The question is...if you decided (in a moment of weakness) to try a chipper in practice and you knocked everything stone dead with it, would you use it in a competition or would the thought of all the abuse stop you?

I get so much abuse on the course anyway it wouldn't make any difference (still wouldn't use a chipper tho).

Wouldnt have an "easy out" near me. If neither Rory nor Tiger use them (plus many others), why should I? I am trying to keep my shot shape lower, a hybrid balloons them for a soft landing.
Its like Federer using a standard tennis racquet and amateurs using larger ones to make the game easier....allegedly.

Chippers are also sold in disguise as 'putting wedges'. The same way that mens moisturiser is disguised as aftershave balm.

A chipper is........bad.

Water off a duck's back. If it works for you, ignore the posers who think they know everything about golf. I have used several (not all at the same time) for over 30 years and I've come to no harm. Why no similar condemnation of the lob wedge?

Anyway, what has it got to do with anyone but the player who chooses to use one?

So , ignore those that know all and listen to those that know they know nothing? ;)
:D
Chippers (God, I cant believe I even typed the word without wretching) were never adopted as proper clubs by any of the better players. Lob wedges are useful in more than one situation, ie bunkers, rough, bare lies over obstacles etc. That said, in the wrong hands, they may as well be cricket bats.

My Dad has one, as do a few of his mates. Lethal from about 50 yards and in. But to me, you could play the same shot with a 7i quite easily given a bit of practice.

Can't see the point, unless you carry less than 14 clubs. Even then, there must be other clubs that could be put in which would be more useful.

My personal feeling on chippers is this.

You are allowed 14 clubs in the bag why not make them as versitile as possible. Even a hybrid can be used around the greens and produce a similar shot to a chipper, so, why not use the extra slot in your bag for something really useful
