What hc do you consider to be a good player?

I don't use handicaps to judge players off their handicaps, I mean, we all know a blag single figure handicap golfer don't we.....

I think you can be a good player off quite a high handicap. For example, I play golf with an old boy at our club off 22. He's well into his 70's, hits it short but pretty straight. Takes a few blows to get to the green and rarely 3 putts. He got to a 2 handicap in his prime.

He was 3 over for the front 9 the other week on our shorter Winter course. I wouldn't consider him an a poor or average golfer. He manages his game superbly and is hard to beat !

Everyones idea of good is different in all aspects of life. I've never caused an accident on the road but does it make me a good driver? I dont think i am personally.

IMO id quantify as follows

Excellent - up to 2
Good - 3 - 6
Steady - 6 - 10
Not bad - 11 - 15
ok - 15 - 18
Remainder - Well if you need 2 shots on any hole you need to practice or sack it ;)

Happy with that, but I do get up to Edinburgh quite a bit so if I ever get a chance to meet on the course I'll make sure I don't ask for advice:p

Ask me to arrange a game and I will but you aren't getting any shots, that's just being stupid.

Oh and I'll wear ear muffs coz you'd probably do my nut in ;)

Just all depends on what group you're considering. Those saying that Cat 4 shouldn't bother, try & remember that compared to the general population, being able to knock it round in less than 100 makes you a good golfer!
And compared to all of the occasional society golfers who go on a works do and like to have a couple of cans during the round, a Cat 3 golfer in the mid-high teens is a good golfer.

The vast majority of us on here are club golfers, so in our group I'd say that single figures is a good golfer. Anyone maintaining a Cat 1 handicap is better than "good" IMO, and those who are down around scratch are really seriously good.

Good golfers are a par every other hole in my book so 9 ish handicap. Anyone saying you have to be a scratch golfer to be classed as good is in dreamland as I don't think you need to be in the top 1% of golfers to be classed as good. That's the excellant golfers.

There is no right answer, it's all subjective no matter what anyone says. Golf doesn't work in this way, there is no great/good/average band. I would say tho that anyone outside of this forum would probably say if you were 18 or less you'd be a "good" golfer. It's their opinion, which is likely more accurate than those on here who let's face it, can be quite snobbish

A lot seem to be answering the Q based on a handicap number in relation to other players and that's why we're seeing 9, 12 even 18 suggested as a 'good player' and I can see why you'd do that but golf already has a standard to measure against which doesn't get polluted by the ability of others, its called par and when this is used it then seems ridiculous to suggest a 12 handicapper is a good player

If you need extra shots on 2/3 of the course that's not and never will be a good player handicap

20 plus, you play golf
10 to 19, you are a golfer
0 to 9 you are a good golfer
plus golfer, you are probably a dick, why are you not on tour if you are THAT good?

These are my ready reckoner categories, so 9 handicap or less and you are a good golfer IMO, less than 20 I will refer to you as a golfer and 20 or above, you play golf, but you are no golfer...

There are a lot of good plus golfers who are a long way from tour standard.

The ams turning pro are generally only doing well off +3/4/5.

I see +1/2/3 as a very good county level am.

Age dependant I think of course too.
