I was talking with my pro about grips today and he is wanting to change my grip from baseball to overlapping as he thinks it could be possibly holding me back. So can everyone list there grip style along with there handicap. I am interested to know if there is a grip style that is more common among low handicap golfers.

I am 9 hcp baseball grip soon to be changing to overlap.

Interlocking from the age of 9 to 11, but overlapping for the last 51 years. Current HI is 4.6

"Baseball" grip was very common among top players 100 years ago.
Left thumb (right handed players) round the shaft rather than down the shaft was also common. This one is visible on lots of old photos if you look carefully.

1. A lot would depend on your hand size but no grip is right or wrong.
2. The ball doesn't know or care how you are holding the club
3. Having said, the following golfers interlock
Jack Nicklaus
Tiger Woods
Rory Mcllroy

What fault did your pro say a change in grip would fix?

I am hitting the ball pretty well the now but the pro is slightly worried I am not releasing my hands enough through the ball and suggested we try the overlapping grip to hopefully let my hands work as one and release better. He thinks I will maybe get down to 6/7 handicap this year but might hit a brick wall with my grip and he doesn’t want my grip to hold me back. We are trying to push for scratch next year and the pro thinks it’s very achievable so he’s trying to get everything in place.

1. I was overlap until about 6 years ago (I'm 65). Got a little arthritis popping up in my left index finger so I couldn't put my right hand over that finger.
2. Switched to interlock when the finger was causing an issue.
3. Switched to 10 finger grip a couple of years ago and now at my lowest handicap. 6.2, should be a little lower tomorrow after playing decently today.

Conclusion. Doesn't make diddly-poo of difference to me. I sometimes go back to one of the other grips for a while.....I play about the same.

HI 6.4
Interlocking

I have fairly small hands and short fingers and find that I simply can't grip the club with the overlap

Hcap 13.7 at the moment. I've always used a kind of reverse overlap. So the left forefinger kind of sits on top of my right pinky. I don't think it's particularly common but I've never done anything different. That just felt comfortable so I went with it. I've tried the interlocking on the range once or twice in it feels like I'm going to yank my pinky out of it's socket so quickly binned that idea off. Strong grip as well.

US Open winner Ouimet with left thumb round the shaft and resting on index finger of same hand.
Try it - feels really weird, but was reasonably common years ago. You can't effectively do overlapping or interlocking with this.

Vardon grip.

HI 3.0.

When I first started (1986) I used the baseball grip and changed after about 6 months.

I have tried interlocking and it feels like my little fingers are going to break.

Lad at my place right handed with right above left - hits the ball miles. He is still working on getting down to SF HI. Goes wrong elsewhere.

I‘m overlapping grip (as Ben Hogan Modern Fundamentals…). HI 8.2.
