What golf games do you play in the winter??

Now that the season is well and truly over, our sunday game is looking to play something different, we generally play a stableford & are going to start a no 3 putt rollover.

Does anybody else have a good format to play a few quid for.

I play the "sitting on the couch watching golf on the telly" game. We've just had some snow, so that'll be the course shut until it thaws.

This is my first winter playing team golf, we've been playing things like yellow ball and waltz. Pretty fun games that don't rely on everyone to score on every hole

Good idea but our handicaps range 6 thro 14, the 6 H/C should win hands down, come to think of it the little b****r generally does anyway, he shot gross 70 yesterday and moaned the whole time thereafter about a double bogey and a missed putt.

How about the other 3 beating the c**p out of the one who gets his 5th birdie of the day.

Do I sound resentful!!, I do hope not as he's a charming boy really.

Each hole is worth 3 points. One point for first person to hit the green, one point for nearest the pin, and one for lowest score.

So basically if your first to play to the green you have the advantage of the possibility of getting the first point (on a par 4/5 this opportunity goes to the person shortest off the tee, so you don't penalise the shorter hitters in this game). Nearest the pin when everyone is on the green is a point that can be won by anyone (usually not the person that hit the green first, as you often find the guy that misses the green gets a good chance of chipping close). Lowest score is usually a good evener of the best player (but is only awared when they are the ONLY person with that score).

When played in a group of 3 or 4 it can get quite strategic with people intentionally missing the green to ensure you can get a chip close ... or playing a 3 wood off the tee for first chance at the green ... of course having the honour on the par 3's is a good advantage also.

We like to play it as the person with the best game doesn't always win, if you play the strategy you can collect loads of points with a really poor round of golf

snooker,darts, blackjack anything to keep warm and dry only get the clubs out if it is dry and sunny,golf is supposed to be for enjoyment so what is the enjoyment of getting cold wet and muddy if i wanted those things i would still be playing rugby.

We play a game called stats....

Start off with 0 points

There are 4 points per hole available.

Par 3's

Green in one shot = 2 points

Par or less = 2 points

Par 4's

Fairway = 1 Point

Green in reg = 1 point

Par or less = 2 points

Par 5's

Fairway = 1 point

Green in reg = 1 Point

Par or less = 2 points

Nearest to 72 points is the winner.

Its great fun as we only tot the scores up when we get back in, adding a bit more suspense.

Its also a great way to practice keeping the ball in play as you pick up points for just hitting fairways.

This may be identical to another game out there, but I never look at other formats as I only ever play singles or matchplay and this format with my mates when having a knock.

On Saturday we played something we named "Killer 6's". I've played it in pairs before where 1st 6 holes is better ball Stableford, 2nd 6 is both point scores combined and final 6 is one multiplied by the other. So sometimes David and I will play that together and we have a pb score we like to try and beat. Our pb day we both birdied the last for 16 points so it's proving tough to beat. Really keeps the mind focussed. Anyhow, on Ladies Day were were out in 3's so it was best score, then best 2 scores and the killer was best multiplied by worst. Holy moley was it stressy the final 6 holes and boy were we keen to win !! We managed to only blob one hole and that was down to the lowest handicapper playing in our team (plays off 8) - it was really good fun but also very similar to the tension felt over a medal putt - in fact even more so when a putt for 1 means the team as a whole scores...or not.

Good call, have heard something like this but not played it, will give it a try in the new year, we have a turkey trot this week and medal next so it will be the new year. I assume that the two points scores are multiplied together on the last 6 holes.
