Had a few showers yesterday and about 15 people did not turn up for The Competition. When talking to the pro he advised that the majority do not even bother to tell him by phone which makes his work even more difficult.

What system does your Club use and how can it be avoided?

We've introduced a comp ban.

I can't say I agree with it. Everyone wants to play (we're a keen old bunch) but sometimes life or the weather simply makes it totally impossible or unpleasant.

If a single player loses his spot with a 4 ball, he/she can team up normally within a few tee times.

I'd prefer a 3 strikes policy or something.

Visitors can start on the 10th, the club times are 8.00-10.30 (or so) then it's an open tee......does it really matter if a few don't or can't come?

I dont recall the procedure but I do know my old club was pretty harsh on no shows for drawn comps.

I think its more than OK to pull out as real life comes first, as it should, but if you have a chance then make the pphone call to say you cannot make it. Even if its 20 mins before you tee off at least the pro has a chance to shout round the bar to see who wants a game!

if you don't phone to say you won't be there for your tee time. you lose your post money and your barred from the next weeks comp, but can play for handicap purposes only.
if you phone and cancel no probs.

If they don't turn up or ring to cancel they can't put their name on the next week's sheet for the first 30mins it's out - basically means they'll not got a decent tee time, especially in winter.

If you call the pro shop at least an hour before your time so they can find a replacement (we usually have a list of reserves for the booked tee times) then there is no action. A no show will get you a warning and second will get you a three comp ban although there seems to be a huge discrepancy between those getting pinged and those seemingly able to escape at will

This is what my club does:

WEEKENDS & OTHER CLUB COMPETITIONS where specific tee times are allocated.

Booking in: (clubhouse) – A player must report to the sign in table and collect their card and pay any entry fee due not later than 20 minutes prior to their listed tee time.* Note: all members must pay a green fee playing at weekends. This applies to both general play and competitions.* If in doubt ask at the pro shop.
Failure to comply – A player will incur a two shot penalty that must add to there first hole.* Failure to apply this penalty will mean the players’ card will be disqualified from the competition.

Late to the TEE: – A player must report to the tee at least 5 minutes ahead of their allotted tee time (this tee time is entered on their card when signing in).
Failure to comply – A two shot penalty will be given by the starter (if in operation) the player must add these to their first hole.* Failure to apply this penalty will mean the players will be disqualified from the competition.

No show for allotted tee time: – A player must notify the Competition Secretary, not less than 24 hours prior to the competition if they cannot play/attend.*
Failure to comply – failure to notify the Competition Secretary minimum 24 hours in advance or not to show up at all, will incur a TWO MATCH/COMPETITION BAN.

Not entering score on computer and/or handing in your card.

Not signing your card or signing an incorrect card

Failure to comply with both items above will incur –Disqualification and a one match ban.

Any player being given a match ban will have their name placed on an information sheet posted on the men’s competition notice board.* This will indicate who has received a ban and the events they are banned from.* Persistent offenders will be reported to the main committee and suitable punishment agreed notified and applied.

we dont have any penalties and you can withdraw your name from time sheet up to 2 hours before so really there will only be a few instances of not being able to show up without withdrawing. although i personally agree with the 2/3 comp bans.

I would question the validity of these "rules" as the time you are expected on the tee is determined by the Rules of Golf as is the penalty for being late - late is not being there 5 minutes before tee off. I cant believe that signing in less than 20 mins before tee off can be penable under a local rule

I await to be corrected!

I agree that penalising someone for not signing in 20 minutes ahead of tee time is harsh.
Not everyone wants to spend 15 mins on the putting green

Interesting. According to the R&A you can't be disqualified for not entering your score in the computer as it would be a modification of Rule 6-6b. They can impose a club sanction though so the ban part is Ok.
