Was wondering what the general opinion was about using iphone stroke savers (yardage books) and rule books (irules) on the golf course? Is it a move in the right direction or is it ruining the chance to escape the everyday? Would love to hear what you think.

Plus, would you be interested in a book that combines the yardage book and rule book, so that the rules are defined for specific locations on your course. Would again love to hear what you think.

I dont mind people using any gadget because it doesnt play the shot for them even though i think they help,as for the rules for certain places on your course they are printed mostly on the back of a score card.It does pay to have a rule book handy just in case.

Thanks for the reply - interesting comments. I was just wondering because I know that a lot of people who I play with on Sunday medals enjoy the opportunity to escape the modern world while on the course.

True, local rules do give the definitions for locations on the course, but then refer you to the rule book for course of action. Was just thinking that it would be a good for a companion guide (and time saver) to have both procedure and location in the same book.

a strokesaver in any form is an asset. a rule book in whatever form should be carried by all players. combining the two isn't practical or necessary.

not practical due to cost, plus it would be a time waster not a time saver

where you would gain would be for courses to ensure that the physical interpretation of the rules were clearly and properly placed eg boundary and hazard markers (and next tee markers and drop zones).
