Ill give an example of a typical day
ie today
few passenger alarms , making sure the signalers hold the trains in platforms so people avoid being stuck in tunnels unnecessary during the alarms.
managing active list of ONAs (where we dont have drivers) having to cancel the trains and working out where they can next come into service , making sure the stock is available for them
booking track access to track staff to do veg control and track inspections
then out of no where a good old 20 min shut down for a track fire. (happens a lot this time of year) and you can imagine we cant run trains over a fire!..
stopping movements in the area, getting at first the station staff down with a fire extinguisher (after turning off the traction current for them) whilst arranging for the fire service to attend
Thankfully it was just off the edge of the platform so didnt take them ages to walk to and put out
after that mess is cleared up the task of getting all the trains back to time
as sad as it sounds it is a nice feeling to have all that rubbish and had over a right time railway to the late turn.

After Uni, spent 2 1/2 years as a Tree Surgeon to gain practical experience then went into local authority Arboricultural Management. Worked my way through the ranks and finished as Chief Parks' Officer. If only it was just about looking after trees, grass and shrubs! That was the easy bit - it was everything else that caused the headaches. Consequently know more than is sensible about catering, recreational concessions, car parking, toilets & plumbing, staging motor racing events, river restoration, planning & development, heritage grants, ecology, subsidence and ...

I suppose I should have added to mine, woodworker/carpenter seeing as what started as a little hobby a few years ago has turned into a serious business concern with a workshop full of some serious machines.

Started running a fuel station, workshop & car sales centre in '79, ran it for 20yrs and 28 days.
Then had a service, repair & MOT centre with my twin brother.
Sold that in 2009 ................................ had eight holidays that year as I thought I was rich!
Realised I wasn't, decided to dabble in property refurbishment.
The 1st one went well ...................... the 2nd one didn't!
Got back into used car sales for about 3 years. Total disaster. It effectively broke me both financially and mentally.
Now I'm a gardener, registered with Age UK, earning very little but meeting some lovely people.
The last week was utter torture, just far too hot.
Aiming to semi-retire next year.

50 years in retail and property management. Been retired for two years so life revolves around playing golf, looking after the grandchildren when needed mowing the lawn and tending the flower beds.

High pressure and times of stress but good rewards and company culture so balances overall, and I enjoy the mental challenge and growth. No 2 days the same.
Love the people I work with and the clients are largely good people. Hours sensible most of the time but with an APAC team and my boss in US central time it can mean some early mornings and late finishes. But I can work my diary to get golf in every now and then midweek!
Plan is to cash in my small equity at the next exit (likely 2-3 years) and take a career break. But not sure if that is a dream or reality! Considering an MBA in the interim to give me some wider options

Long career in Nationwide doing all sorts. Last 15 years freelance consultancy took me all over the place in all sorts of sectors, some financial services, some completely different. Last big one was for HM Coastguard, which was really good.
Stopped in January, the letter to say my Ltd Co was dissolved came this week!
Technically, I guess that makes me retired aged 59! My old boss keeps threatening to tempt me back to work, but can't see that happening.
Off to Saunton for a few days on the morning!
