Ive been hitting the ball rather well , trying to play the right shot at the right time etc, but the game is just chewing me up & spitting me out , every bounce i get seems to be a bad one , if i end up in a bunker its either plugged or in a foot mark, just off the fairway it seems to be behind the only tree on the hole , on the fairway if there is a divot il find it ..

Sunday morning i hit the 1st 5 in regulation 4 tap in pars & a birdie , bad tee shot on par 3 6th costs me a shot .. still level , on 7&8 in regulation for easy pars , triple bogey 7 on 9 from nowhere , bad 2nd shot put me in trouble so i can accept that .. on 10-14 in regulation , happy days its back , opens the heavens with rain & wind picks up sign for 83 (i think) & yet another .1..

If i was playing realy bad i could go away & practice , but im hitting it well , if there are golfing gods they have it in for me ,

what do ye do in this situation .. ?

Bill, I think you be happy your hitting it well enough and be sure that your luck will change.

Some of us (me) are playing terrible and would swap you places in an instant:mmm:

I dont know which is worse tho Stephen , like i say if your playing bad you can go away & work on something , ah im just whinging mate , this is going on for 5 or 6 rounds now .. have a good months golf ahead , K Club on sunday , Mount Wolsey later in the month , and the Audi Quattro Cup in Carton Hse on june 21st ..spoiled child, feeling picked on syndrome ha

SB that was ok the 1st once or twice but now the humour has worn off mate ..

as long as you're hitting/swinging well the scores will come.

You had 4 tap in pars first 5 holes, what if 3 had dropped? you'd be 4 under par after 5, take consolation your playing well

You can work on something if you know whats wrong mate but when every part of your game is pants at seperate times in the round its difficult to figure out whats up.

Heres my last four competition scores 27pts, 26pts, 23pts and 27pts.........now thats depressing

luck evens out over time but people tend to remember the bad bounces and forget the good. Next time you hit an approach short and it catches the downslope and runs to the hole or cannons a tree but rebounds into the fairway just try and remember it and think today is my lucky day...then go shoot low :)

When you get some bad luck just shrug and smile, thats just golf and look forward to playing an unusual shot to rescue the situation. Practice those trouble shots, back handed from behind trees, buried in bunkers or out of divots if possible and they wont seem so bad on the course.

what I don't do is dwell on bad luck

I may consider whether I have made a poor decision, rather than poor execution, and then try and work out why I did it and how to avoid it next time - not to beat myself up over it. Your second to 9th being a case in point.

that's it.

well apart from being thankful that I'm hitting it well!

Some might say that's about right..........:p

Seriously though Bill I feel your pain. As others have said if you are hitting the ball well then it's just a case of waiting on your luck turning. Stick with it, it will come when you least expect it to.

Sounds to me like patience is the key. I went through a similar spell for a few weeks earlier in the year - it did hurt - but I played through it and have come out the otherside intact and with some form. I've finally realised that this game is impossible to play well all the time and it's all about accepting the peaks and troughs, and making the most of those peaks when they come along.

I don't know what else to suggest, you're going to get bad breaks and bounces sometimes. If you put a good swing on it and end up bouncing into the cabbage or behind a tree then that's simply bad luck.

Once the ball has left the club you no longer have control over things.

Try to remember the good shots (of which it sounds like there were many) rather than the poor ones.

I know how you feel. I played on Monday and hit it really well, making 16 GIR. Walked away with 1 birdie (at the 18th, typically) when I should have made 4 or 5.

I'm hitting it well but can't sink anything. It's very frustrating because I know there's a good score just waiting to come out but, as others have said, one day it will click and putts will drop (hopefully in the Club Championships next weekend :) )

The positive side is that you know you can play and you know you're in form. As soon as you get a few breaks, you'll be looking at low numbers.

when playing well but not scoring well I remind myself of the "shooter Mentality" that a sports psychologist refers to.

e.g 3 point shooter with an average of 50% for free throws. If he misses, then he says the next one will be in cos he shoots 50%. If he misses the next, then the probability of the 3rd going in is even higher! So if he misses 20 in a row he actually believes the 21st effort HAS to go in!.

To combplete the shooters mentality - if the first goes in as well as the second, then he convinces himself that its his day and he cannot miss.

Best of both worlds, but in OP case the next round will be a blinder as he is DUE one.

I like this. I'm going to adopt it for my putting.

As of today, and regardless of what the stats say, my average is 32 putts per round.

It doesn't bother me like it used to...However, I will say that I'm still smarting from the games at the weekend. Yes, it was two new courses and yes they weren't walks in the park, but I've been practising a lot (for me) recently to the point that I've been feeling quite comfortable with me game.

Then I go to Bearwood Lakes and South Wilts and play some ridiculously inconsistent golf...I hit some good shots, but I also hit some absolute shockers which I have no explanation for. My putting was to the point of embarrassing on Saturday which, 18 months ago I wouldn't have had a problem with, but now it's been one of the better parts of my game for the last two or three months....And to top it all off, my driver all but deserted me at Salisbury & SW, so much so that I left it in the bag for the majority of the back 9.

Stupid game.

Have you been reading some Dr. Rotella?

yep! Have one of his books on my kindle, and been flicking through it every day since march while on the train in and out of London. Keep forgetting to download another book!

sounding like a broken record at times, usually quote him once a day!

When i play badly which happens regularly, i huff inwardly and wont play until i want to. infact i can barely manage to trudge round the last few holes when i know im getting .1 back.

The next day or the day after i wont head up for 9holes to see if im playing better cause i know that if i dont really want to play i wont play well.

i wont be back on any course until im really excited about playing. if a few good friends(maybe only taking up the game) want to hit a local par3 course that will mabye be all that is required to get me back in the mood. o ther times its will be something silly like watching some golf on sky and seeing some nice swings and shots.

good luck

Phil
