What are your greens like?

I'd sum them up as fairly meh right now. Not overly quick, some of the greens are covered in patches of sand, they're running okay, but nothing like they normally are at this stage of the year, and it's a little worrying when we've got the Lancashire Amateur Champs at the start of June. I would imagine the greenstaff will be working incredibly hard between now and then to get them up to scratch.

ours a coming along very nicely...we needed the rain of last week - and with the warmth of the weekend and this coming week - should see them excellent.

The greens over the past few years have been getting better and better, the green staff put a shed load of graft in to get in good knick for the season. They were bobbly before greens week a month of so back, but now, they are green lush, firming up very nicely, might even get firm enough to have them ironed, which will be a real shock to a few members, greens running close to 10+, never heard of at Whickham.

Dave,
That's good to hear
Must have improved loads
As a group of us played yours about 3wks ago
The greens were pish
Patchy, bobbly, jumpy, very sandy
With no reference to this given to us upon paying green fees, 16 visitors on a quiet Monday, everybody was foaming😡

Best greens I've played on recently in the area are
Garesfield , excellent greens, be happy to putt on them every week.
Castle Eden , 1st time I'd played and was very impressed, great condition, true, fast greens, that still took a ball

Our greens are full of something called Microdochium nivale disease.

Been on them last couple of years don't seem to get any better. And lost 34members this season and looks likely to lose more next season including myself. As fees going up and standard dropping. Been letters written to the club. Been raised at the AGM this season even signed something that was presented to council about the condition of the greens.

Problem we have the people don't seem to listen we l love the club but a prime example we had a dry spell of weather the other week that lasted a good 2/3 weeks. Our greens didn't get any water, it got to the point we're the green was burning with the heat of the sun and greens were starting to show signs of cracking on the surface.

The head green keeper was up with a the strimmer working at a flower bed. A few of us asked him to water the greens he said he's no way of watering them.

However low and behold a tractor and tanker landed up and soaked the greens the next day. Of course it was done in the heat of the day and someone approached the green keeper and said great to see some sort of water going down but why you putting it on in the heat of day. His response was well am not doing it at night as I have power hosing to do at the house.

And to note he lives 500 yards from the 1st tee box.

So things dont look good at the club. The green keeper himself is a keen golfer and plays off 3/4 HC. However his background is in grounds work and not green keeping. So I don't know if he's to blame or how is. All I know is I have been a member from 2007 when I started golf and year on year the condition has dropped. And ultimately we lost the head green keeper in 2008 as he went to work on GAA pitches as there was more money in that. And what we have now is a grounds man.

I feel bad saying that but that's what it looks like he's a nice man and good lad to play a round with but the condition has gone down and the fees gone up. I guess people Get to the point we're they are force to move on as things don't seem to improve year on year

I played at my local course, which I hated, with a mate yesterday. I could have cried. THeir greens were perfect. The course has under gone some brilliant changes. Trees and scrub removed to reveal the course. Loved it. It's now only £70 more than where I play 15 miles away. I'm furious !

Which course did you play yesterday ? Lots in the area (maybe the country) are taking up trees these days to let light through to parts of the course / greens etc. We have done the same. Some complain but I think it looks great.

Macclesfield. Trees and scrub removed so you can see the course. Grass cut. Greens superb. Apparently Jamie Donnaldson (local lad) has been consulted over some of the changes.
